ΕΝΑ ΜΟΝΑΔΙΚΟ ΓΕΦΥΡΙ ΣΤΗΝ ΠΕΡΙΟΧΗ ΚΑΜΑΡΑ, ΜΑΣΤΙΧΑΡΙ

Στην περιοχή Καμάρα, πεδινή τοποθεσία δυτικά του συνοικισμού Μαστιχάρι, βρίσκεται το ιδιαίτερο αυτό γεφύρι. Η ονομασία προέρχεται από το εκεί γεφύρι, το οποίο, κατά την παράδοση, για να τελειώσει, έχτισε μέσα ο πρωτομάστορας τη γυναίκα του. Λέγεται επίσης, ότι εκεί υπάρχουν φαντάσματα, κι ότι παλαιότερα άναβαν κάθε βράδυ καντήλι.

Μας οδήγησε εκεί πρώτη φορά ο Ιωάννης Γκίκας, κι ενώ μπορέσαμε να το δούμε από ψηλά, καθώς είναι χωμένο σε μια χαράδρα, δεν στάθηκε δυνατόν να κατέβουμε να το δούμε από κοντά. Πριν λίγο καιρό, δέχτηκα ένα τηλεφώνημα από τον Κυριάκο Παππούλη, ο οποίος έχει καταλάβει πια τον ενθουσιασμό μας για τις κρυφές ομορφιές της Κω και με ενημέρωσε ότι κατάφερε να αποκτήσει πρόσβαση στο γεφύρι και πήγαμε να το δούμε.

Την πρώτη φορά που καταφέραμε να δούμε το γεφύρι από ψηλά, το 2013 ήταν σαφώς σε καλύτερη κατάσταση

Το πρώτο και βασικότερο συμπέρασμα στο οποίο φτάσαμε όλοι μας είναι ότι το γεφύρι αυτό κινδυνεύει άμεσα. Αν δεν γίνει κάποια διορθωτική παρέμβαση, πιθανά στην επόμενη έντονη κακοκαιρία θα καταρρεύσει.

Ο Κυριάκος επισκέφτηκε το σημείο και με τον κ. Μαστορόπουλο, Αρχαιολόγο, συγγραφέα του βιβλίου "Αντιμάχεια Κώα", ο οποίος μίλησε για μεγάλης ιστορικής αξίας μνημείο, καθώς διέκρινε στοιχεία δύο διαφορετικών εποχών. Ανέφερε, χαρακτηριστικά, ότι το πετρόχτιστο αυτό γεφύρι φέρει λιθοδομή ελληνιστικής αλλά και ρωμαϊκής περιόδου.

Δεν ξέρω αν θα μπορούσε αυτό το τοξωτό γεφύρι να συνδεθεί ίσως με κάποιο νερόμυλο ή άλλη χρήση νερού καθώς υπάρχει άφθονο νερό στην περιοχή. Το σίγουρο είναι πως η περιοχή κάτω από το γεφύρι έχει γίνει σκουπιδότοπος, καθώς πολλοί ρίχνουν εκεί τα μπάζα τους και τα νεροφαγώματα καθιστούν το μέλλον του γεφυριού αβέβαιο αν δεν επέμβει κάποιος άμεσα.

Μακάρι κάποιοι ειδικοί να αποφανθούν για την ιστορική σημασία του γεφυριού και αν γίνεται να προληφθεί η περαιτέρω διάβρωσή του και η αναπόφευκτη κατάρρευσή του.

A Unique Bridge in the Kamara Area, Mastichari

In the area of Kamara, a flat region west of the settlement of Mastichari, stands this distinctive bridge. The name Kamara (“arch”) comes from the bridge itself, which, according to local tradition, was completed only after the master builder immured his own wife within it. It is also said that the place is haunted, and that in earlier times a small oil lamp used to burn there every night.

We were first led to the spot by Ioannis Gikas. Although we managed to view the bridge from above — since it lies buried deep within a ravine — it was impossible at the time to climb down and see it up close. Some time ago, I received a phone call from Kyriakos Pappoulis, who by now knows well our enthusiasm for the hidden beauties of Kos. He told me that he had managed to access the bridge, and we went there together to see it.

When we first saw the bridge from above, back in 2013, it was clearly in much better condition.

The first and most important conclusion we all came to was that this bridge is in immediate danger. Unless some kind of restoration or stabilizing intervention is made, it will most likely collapse after the next severe storm.

Kyriakos later visited the site together with Mr. Mastoropoulos, an archaeologist and author of the book “Antimacheia of Kos.” He described the bridge as a monument of great historical significance, as he identified architectural features from two distinct periods. Specifically, he noted that the stone-built bridge displays masonry characteristics of both the Hellenistic and Roman eras.

Kyriakos guided us under the bridge, explaining its importance and the threat it now faces.

I do not know whether this arched bridge might once have been connected to a watermill or served another hydraulic purpose, since there is abundant water in the area. What is certain, however, is that the area beneath the bridge has turned into a dumping ground, as many people throw their rubble there. Erosion from the water further endangers the bridge’s stability, making its future highly uncertain unless immediate action is taken.

The Kamara area, near where the bridge stands, remains picturesque and tranquil, yet it silently shelters this forgotten structure.

Let us hope that experts will soon assess the bridge’s historical value and determine whether it is possible to prevent further deterioration and save it from inevitable collapse.
