Η ίριδα η ονυχοφόρος στον ποταμό Κάλαμο της Κεφάλου

Το όνομα της το πήρε από το ουράνιο τόξο λόγω του πλήθους των χρωμάτων που έχουν τα άνθη των διαφόρων ειδών της. Σύμφωνα με άλλους, το γένος Iris πήρε το όνομά του από την ελληνική θεότητα Ίριδα.

Πολυετές αρωματικό και φαρμακευτικό φυτό με μεγάλα μπλε-ιώδη άνθη που περιέχουν λευκά και κίτρινα σχέδια.

Το γένος Iris L. περιλαμβάνει περί τα 200 με 300 είδη στις εύκρατες περιοχές του πλανήτη και στην Ελλάδα βρίσκουμε 10 από αυτές. Η Iris unguicularis είναι ένα από τα 10 είδη.

Τα τρία υποείδη της Iris unguicularis (=ονυχοφόρος) είναι η angustifolia (ενδημική της Πελοποννήσου), η carica (της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου) και η cretensis (ενδημική της Κρήτης).

Εγώ τη συνάντησα στο νησί της Κω αρκετές φορές-- Ιανουάριο στον ποταμό Κάλαμο της Κεφάλου και στον Λινοπότη, Φεβρουάριο στο Πυργί της Κεφάλου και στο Σύμπετρο, και τέλη Μαρτίου στην Αγία Μαρίνα στην Αντιμάχεια.

Έχω την εντύπωση ότι στην Κω συναντάμε το υποείδος carica. Ανθίζει το χειμώνα και συνεχίζει και τον πρώτο μήνα της άνοιξης στις πιο κρύες περιοχές (?){ αυτό είναι θεωρητικό, γιατί στην Κω την έχω δει και τέλη Μαρτίου}.

The winter iris along the Kalamos River, Kefalos (Kos)

The iris takes its name from the rainbow, because of the wide range of colors found in the flowers of its various species. According to others, the genus Iris was named after the Greek goddess Iris, the divine messenger associated with the rainbow.

It is a perennial, aromatic, and medicinal plant with large blue-violet flowers that feature white and yellow markings. The genus Iris L. includes approximately 200–300 species in the temperate regions of the world, and in Greece we find 10 of them. Iris unguicularis is one of these ten species.

Subspecies

The three subspecies of Iris unguicularis (winter iris) are:

angustifolia (endemic to the Peloponnese),

carica (of the Eastern Mediterranean),

cretensis (endemic to Crete).

Where I encountered it οn Kos

I have come across it several times on the island of Kos:

In January, along the Kalamos River in Kefalos and in Linopotis

In February, at Pyrgi of Kefalos and at Sympetro

In late March, at Agia Marina in Antimachia

I have the impression that in Kos we encounter the subspecies carica. It blooms in winter and continues into the first month of spring in colder regions (this is theoretical, as in Kos I have seen it even in late March).

Characteristics

Its flowers grow close to the ground, often emerging before the full development of the leaves. The leaves are long, narrow, and sword-shaped. The plant prefers rocky or semi-shaded areas and well-drained soils.

The winter flowering period, combined with its striking violet hues and delicate fragrance, makes Iris unguicularis one of the most distinctive wildflowers of the Mediterranean landscape.
