ΤΟ ΟΥΡΑΝΙΟ ΤΟΞΟ, ΣΥΜΒΟΛΟ ΤΥΧΗΣ ΚΑΙ ΕΛΠΙΔΑΣ

«Κάπου πάνω από το ουράνιο τόξο, εκεί ψηλά, υπάρχει μια χώρα που έχω ακουστά, όπου ο ουρανός είναι γαλάζιος και τα όνειρα γίνονται πραγματικότητα», τραγουδούσε κάποτε η Τζούντι Γκάρλαντ στον "Μάγο του Οζ".

Στα μάτια μικρών και μεγάλων το πολύχρωμο θέαμα του ουράνιου τόξου φαντάζει πάντα σαν μια μαγική ζωγραφιά, ένα θαύμα και ταυτόχρονα ένα σύμβολο τύχης και ελπίδας. Διπλό ουράνιο τόξο φύλαγε για το τέλος του το 2017 στον ουρανό της Κω.

THE RAINBOW, SYMBOL OF LUCK AND HOPE

“Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, there’s a land that I’ve heard of, where the sky is blue and dreams come true,” once sang Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.

In the eyes of both children and adults, the colorful spectacle of the rainbow always appears like a magical painting, a miracle, and at the same time a symbol of luck and hope. A double rainbow was the final gift of 2017 in the sky of Kos.

Ο Άγιος Ελευθέριος είναι ένα μικρό εκκλησάκι λίγο πριν το Νέο Στάδιο "Ανταγόρας", ανήκει στην ενορία Αγίων Πάντων και γιορτάζει στις 15 Δεκεμβρίου.
Χτίστηκε ως τάμα, αμέσως μετά την απελευθέρωση, το 1947, από τον ράπτη Θεόδωρο Παυλάκη (συγγενή του Κων/νου Κογιόπουλου), σε κτήμα ιδιοκτησίας του με τη συνδρομή των πιστών της περιοχής που περίμεναν εναγωνίως την ελευθερία τους από τον Τουρκικό, τον Ιταλικό και Γερμανικό ζυγό.

Τον τελευταίο καιρό η εκκλησία έχει αλλάξει, έχει μεγαλώσει, έχει ομορφύνει.

Στον πρόναο του Αγίου Ελευθερίου στεγάζεται και το Εργαστήριο ψηφιδωτών Κω ΙΜΚ&Ν (Ιεράς Μητρόπολης Κώου και Νισύρου), υπό την καθοδήγηση του κ. Δαυίδ Χατζηδαυίδ για τον οποίο θα αφιερώσω ειδικό άρθρο, και για τα όσα έχει προσφέρει στο ψηφιδωτό της Κω. (Τα μαθήματα λειτουργούν κάθε Δευτέρα και Τετάρτη 6-8 μμ και είναι ΔΩΡΕΑΝ). Την προσπάθεια αυτή στηρίζουν η Ιερά Μητρόπολη Κω, η Αστική εταιρεία Ιπποκράτης, καθώς και ο υπεύθυνος του εργαστηρίου. Το Εργαστήριο Ψηφιδωτών λειτουργεί από το 2021.

Saint Eleftherios, Kos
The most recent photographs show the church after the addition of the mosaic of Saint Eleftherios at the entrance of the church, created by Mr. David Chatzidavid.

Saint Eleftherios is a small chapel located just before the new “Antagoras” Stadium. It belongs to the Parish of All Saints and is celebrated on December 15.

The chapel was built as a votive offering immediately after liberation, in 1947, by the tailor Theodoros Pavlakis (a relative of Konstantinos Kogiopoulos), on his privately owned land, with the support of local believers who had long and anxiously awaited their freedom from Turkish, Italian, and German rule.

In recent years, the church has undergone changes—it has been expanded and beautified.

In the narthex of Saint Eleftherios is housed the Kos Mosaic Workshop of the Holy Metropolis of Kos and Nisyros, under the guidance of Mr. David Chatzidavid, to whom a dedicated article will be devoted for his significant contribution to mosaic art on the island of Kos.

(The classes take place every Monday and Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and are free of charge.)

This initiative is supported by the Holy Metropolis of Kos, the Hippocrates Civil Society, and the workshop’s director himself. The Mosaic Workshop has been operating since 2021.

Περίμενα πέντε μήνες σχεδόν, μετά τον καταστροφικό σεισμό της 21ης Ιουλίου, για να μην πονάει πια. Οι μνήμες-ίσως-δεν πονάνε πια, αλλά οι πληγές είναι ακόμη εδώ κι είναι ακόμη ανοιχτές.

1. ΤΖΑΜΙ DEFTERDAR, Ο ΜΙΝΑΡΕΣ ΚΑΙ Η ΚΡΗΝΗ

Το Τζαμί Defterdar σε τρεις φάσεις, πριν το σεισμό, αμέσως μετά το σεισμό και μετά την απομάκρυνση της κρήνης και του μιναρέ

Στην κεντρική πλατεία της Κω βρίσκεται ένα από τα πιο χαρακτηριστικά μνημεία του νησιού, ΤΟ ΤΖΑΜΙ DEFTERDAR ΣΤΗΝ ΠΛΑΤΕΙΑ ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑΣ.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του σεισμού κατέρρευσε ο μιναρές του τεμένους, ο οποίος έσπασε πέφτοντας σε τρία κομμάτια. Η κωνική κορυφή του έπεσε και κατέστρεψε την καφετέρια "Αέναος" (Ναός).

Ο Μιναρές χτύπησε, πέφτοντας, τη Μαυριτανική Κρήνη, δημιουργώντας μία τεράστια τρύπα στο θόλο της και στις κολώνες που τη στηρίζουν.

2. ΤΖΑΜΙ ΓΕΝΙ ΧΑΣΑΝ ΠΑΣΑ (ΤΗΣ ΛΟΤΖΙΑΣ) ΚΑΙ Η ΚΡΗΝΗ
Μία εξίσου σημαντική πλατεία με την Πλατεία Ελευθερίας, η Πλατεία Πλατάνου, υπέστη επίσης ανεπανόρθωτες ζημιές.

Η μαυριτανική κρήνη του Τζαμιού της Λότζιας κατέρρευσε ολοκληρωτικά.

Ο μιναρές, αν και δεν κατέρρευσε, έχει υποστεί σοβαρές ζημιές κι έχει πάρει και μια μικρή κλίση. Σοβαρές ζημιές, επίσης, έχει και το κεντρικό κτίριο του τεμένους, το οποίο ετοιμαζόταν να μπει σε διαδικασία αποκατάστασης πριν το σεισμό αλλά δεν πρόλαβε.

Σοκαρίστηκα πολύ όταν είδα πως έπεσαν δώδεκα από τις δεκαέξι κολώνες. Η Δυτική Αρχαιολογική Ζώνη βρίσκεται πίσω από το σπίτι μου, κι έχω συνδέσει τον Ξυστό δρόμο με παιχνίδια των παιδικών χρόνων κι αμέτρητες ξεναγήσεις και φωτογραφήσεις. Για περισσότερες πληροφορίες για τον Ξυστό Δρόμο

4. ΠΥΛΗ  ΤΟΥ ΦΟΡΟΥ

5. ΚΤΙΡΙΟ "WHITE CORNER" ΣΤΑ ΕΞΑΡΧΕΙΑ

το κτίριο του White Corner στα Εξάρχεια, σε τρεις φάσεις, πριν το σεισμό, μετά το σεισμό και μετά την κατεδάφιση του 1ου ορόφου

Ένα από τα πιο όμορφα κτίρια του νησιού ήταν το ιταλικό κτίσμα του White Corner στα Εξάρχεια, ένα από τα πιο γνωστά μπαράκια, που από τη δεκαετία του '80 μας καλούσε με το αξέχαστο motto του:"You've been to the rest, now come to the best".

Εδώ γράφτηκε η πιο τραγική σελίδα τη νύχτα του σεισμού, καθώς κατέρρευσε ο πρώτος όροφος του κτιρίου κι έτσι έχασαν τη ζωή τους δύο άνθρωποι.

Λίγους μήνες μετά ο πρώτος όροφος κατεδαφίστηκε τελείως.

Five Places in Kos Before and After the Earthquake

I waited almost five months after the devastating earthquake of 21 July 2017 before writing about it, hoping the pain would have faded. Perhaps the memories no longer hurt as much, but the scars are still here—and they remain open.

1. Defterdar Mosque, Its Minaret, and the Moorish Fountain

The Defterdar Mosque is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the island, standing in Eleftherias Square, the heart of Kos Town.

The photographs show the mosque in three stages: before the earthquake, immediately after, and after the removal of the fountain and the minaret.

During the earthquake, the mosque's minaret collapsed, breaking into three sections as it fell. Its conical top crashed onto the Aenaos (Naos) Café, causing extensive damage.

As it fell, the minaret struck the mosque's Moorish fountain, leaving a huge hole in its dome and severely damaging the supporting columns.

Following the disaster, the damaged fountain was transferred to the parking area of the Roman Odeon, opposite the offices of the Archaeological Service, where restoration work could be carried out.

2. Yeni Hasan Pasha Mosque (Loggia Mosque) and Its Fountain

Another important public space, Platanos Square, also suffered severe and irreversible damage.

Although the mosque's minaret remained standing, it sustained significant structural damage and developed a slight lean. The mosque building itself also suffered extensive damage. Restoration work had already been planned before the earthquake, but the disaster struck before it could begin.

3. The Xystos Road – Western Archaeological Zone

I was deeply shocked to discover that twelve of its sixteen columns had collapsed.

The Western Archaeological Zone lies just behind my home, and the Xystos Road has always been closely connected with my childhood memories, countless guided tours, and many of my photographs.

4. The Gate of Phoros

The Gate of Phoros—known to everyone as the entrance to Exarcheia—before the earthquake.

The island's most beautiful bougainvillea is gone forever.

Part of the Gate of Phoros and the adjacent section known locally as "Fonias" ("The Killer") collapsed, and for several months the area remained closed because it was considered unsafe.

5. The White Corner Building in Exarcheia

The White Corner building in Exarcheia in three stages: before the earthquake, immediately after the earthquake, and after the demolition of its first floor.

One of the island's finest Italian-era buildings housed the famous White Corner, one of Kos's best-known bars. Since the 1980s, it had welcomed visitors with its unforgettable motto:

"You've been to the rest, now come to the best."

This building became the scene of the greatest tragedy on the night of the earthquake. The first floor collapsed, claiming the lives of two people.

A few months later, the building's first floor was completely demolished.
