THE EXCAVATION AT ANCIENT ALASARNA CONTINUES…
Once again this year, under challenging conditions, the excavation at the beloved archaeological site of Alasarna in Kardamaina continues.
For 15 days, a small team of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Department of Archaeology and History of Art of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) — led by Associate Professor N. Dimakis, Dr. E. Kalavria, archaeologist of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and Dr. G. Doulfis, educator — quietly carried on an effort that began as a rescue excavation 39 years ago (1982) by the late Charis Kantzia, and which since 1985 has continued as a systematic university excavation by a team of then-young professors, G. Kokkorou-Alevra, S. Kalopissi-Verti, and M. Panayiotidi-Kesisoglou. The hope has always been that even more important finds will come to light and that this archaeological site of our island will finally gain the prestige and recognition it deserves.
