George Kassiotis, from Kos, is part of the research team Sports4VIP, which conceived and built an innovative device that helps visually impaired people experience a sports game.
George Kassiotis graduated from the 1st General Lyceum “Hippocrates” in 2011. He was admitted through national exams to the Department of Physics at the University of Crete in Heraklion. There, he met Konstantinos Kokolakis from Chania and George Deliyiorgis from Rhodes. While studying in Crete, they came up with the idea of creating a device that would help people with visual impairments feel in real time how the ball moves on a sports field.
Much later, in 2019, after they had all graduated—George having returned to Kos, Kostas dividing his time between Chania and the United States (MSc in Astrophysics and Space Physics and PhD at the Technical University of Crete), and George in Sweden (MSc in Artificial Intelligence from KTH, Sweden)—they formed the team Sports4VIP, which went on to be distinguished in the Galileo Masters competition, winning two awards in 2020.
The Galileo Masters competition (https://galileo-masters.eu/) is held annually and funded, among others, by the European Union. It is open to companies, universities, and independent researchers. Its purpose is to promote the use of the European Galileo satellite navigation system in services that benefit society, the environment, industry, and beyond.
The Spatial Information Systems Unit of the Technical University of Crete, led by Professor Panagiotis Partsinevelos, has been participating as a partner in the competition in recent years, organizing and funding the Regional Challenge: Greece.
The team, consisting of George Kassiotis (construction), Dr. Konstantinos Kokolakis (concepts and communication), and George Deliyiorgis (software/information systems), managed to create their first prototype device using a 3D printer. The innovative device features a board that represents the sports field (depending on the sport) divided into sections. Through specific movements, these sections guide the user’s hand to follow the motion of the ball by touch, while simultaneously listening to an audio description. The layout of the device was optimized after research and experimentation to ensure the ball’s motion can be followed without unnecessary moving parts. As the team stated: “Our team envisioned and designed a product that allows people with severe visual impairments to feel, in real time, a game—such as football—using both their hearing and their sense of touch.”
The inspired team won 1st place in the Greek national competition, 1st place in the category “Space for Fun” of the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA), and ranked among the top 12 proposals out of approximately 500 worldwide submissions across all categories.
The results were announced during Space Week 2020, held online from December 7–11, 2020. The related webpage: https://galileo-masters.eu/winner/sports4vip-sports-for-visually-impaired-people/?fbclid=IwAR0K6cPAkC6RrjJetP8cILGy_10ZqMLWjtimKYbY5NZWC-JIZUgpB_WPnbo
Following this major success and double victory, the team has been continuously improving the device. Their latest version (produced by pi:lab) features multiple textures and slopes, specially designed for the needs and preferences of visually impaired individuals. It no longer requires GNSS sensors to be placed on the ball, and their focus is on training the device for recorded matches and, most importantly, applying it in the education of visually impaired people. While initially designed only for football, it has since expanded to basketball and other sports.
Testing of the prototype by visually impaired users highlighted its usefulness, and we eagerly await the next round of testing, which will take place in Kos.
At present, multinational companies and sports teams have approached them, and they are negotiating with sports clubs and associations for the blind to further improve and develop the service, with the ultimate goal of bringing the device to market so that visually impaired people can gain autonomy when watching football or basketball games.
The team has not received any grants so far. All expenses are covered by the three members themselves. However, for the competition, the store GET3D (https://get3d.gr/) in Heraklion, Crete, sponsored the 3D printing of the prototypes, and Vassilis Vitorakis assisted with the design.
We thank George Kassiotis for this wonderful interview!
We wish you success in patenting your excellent idea and hope that you will find people who will help you make it an integral part of the lives of visually impaired individuals.
