Οι δίδυμοι θολωτοί τάφοι της Καρδάμαινας

Το συγκεκριμένο κτίσμα το εντοπίσαμε για πρώτη φορά το 2012 με τον αείμνηστο Μάνο Μαστρογιώργη στην Καρδάμαινα στον δρόμο προς το Norida με φόντο τις ανεμογεννήτριες.

Δεν μπορέσαμε να βρούμε κάτι στη βιβλιογραφία να το ταυτοποιεί, οπότε το αφήσαμε στην άκρη για να ασχοληθούμε αργότερα, όπως τόσα άλλα.

Με την παρότρυνση του φίλου Κυριάκου Παππούλη που το εντόπισε κι εκείνος και με τη σειρά του ήθελε να εξακριβώσει αν επρόκειτο για κτίσμα Βυζαντινής περιόδου ή ακόμα πιο παλιό, αν επρόκειτο για εκκλησία ή κάτι άλλο, επικοινώνησα με τη φίλη αρχαιολόγο, Βασιλική Χριστοπούλου, η οποία πάντα και απλόχερα προσφέρει τις γνώσεις της και συνεισφέρει τα μάλα στην αναγνώριση των ευρημάτων μας.

Μου είπε, λοιπόν, αφού μελέτησε τις φωτογραφίες που της έστειλα πως κατά πάσα πιθανότητα πρόκειται για δίδυμους θολωτούς τάφους με 2 τουλάχιστον φάσεις τοιχοποιίας, εγγεγραμμένοι σε τετράγωνο ή ορθογώνιο, με κονίαμα εσωτερικά και κόγχες. Οι μικρές κόγχες ήταν για αναθήματα (αφιερώματα) και λυχνάρια. Η μία κόγχη, η μεγάλη,  πρέπει να είναι μεταγενέστερη. 

Χρονολογούνται περίπου τον 4-5ο μ.Χ.

Οι συγκεκριμένοι τάφοι είναι αδημοσίευτοι, και αναφέρονται αόριστα στην κήρυξη της Καρδάμαινας από την αρχαιολόγο Βασιλική Χριστοπούλου. 

Οι δίδυμοι θολωτοί τάφοι στην Κω είναι συνηθισμένοι. 

Σε περίπτωση που κάποιος έχει περισσότερες πληροφορίες ή παρατηρήσεις, θα το εκτιμούσα να τις μοιραστεί μαζί μου.

The Twin Domed Tombs of Kardamaina

We first located this structure in 2012, together with the late Manos Mastrogiorgis, in Kardamaina, on the road leading to Norida, with the wind turbines in the background.

At the time, we were unable to find any reference in the bibliography that could help identify it, so we set it aside to look into it later—like so many other cases.

Later, at the urging of our friend Kyriakos Pappoulis, who had also located the structure and wished to determine whether it dated to the Byzantine period or even earlier, and whether it was a church or some other type of building, I contacted my friend, archaeologist Vasiliki Christopoulou. She has always generously shared her knowledge and has contributed greatly to the identification of our finds.

After studying the photographs I sent her, she told me that it is most likely a pair of twin domed tombs, with at least two phases of masonry, inscribed within a square or rectangular plan, featuring interior mortar and niches.

The small niches were intended for offerings (votives) and oil lamps, while the larger niche appears to be a later addition.

The tombs are dated approximately to the 4th–5th century AD.

These particular tombs remain unpublished and are mentioned only in general terms in the official designation of the Kardamaina area by archaeologist Vasiliki Christopoulou.

Twin domed tombs are fairly common on Kos.
