Panagia Palatiani, Kefalos
The church took its name from the location Palatia where it is situated.
At Palatia were found, among other things, the Acropolis, the ancient theater, and a Doric temple of the first capital of Kos, which was named Astypalaia (411 B.C.).
Panagia Palatiani (Nativity of the Theotokos) belongs to the Parish of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary of Kefalos and is located a little after the village of Kefalos, towards Ai Giannis and Theologos.
There are two churches: the old one, almost at the edge of the cliff with an exceptional view, and the new one, a little closer to the road.
Zarraftis mentions Panagia Palatiani as Panagia Sakkeliani in Koia (p. 17).
He also notes that it is “built upon one of the corners of the ancient temple of Dionysus, the identification of which was confirmed by the excavations of 1901, when we found many inscriptions and mutilated statues along with many fragments.”
Essentially, this church stands above the temple of Demeter.
The deep cracks found in the old Panagia Palatiani are the result of a series of seismic tremors that shook Kefalos in 1955 and 1956 and caused significant damage to the church.
Fragments of wall paintings can still be distinguished inside the ruined church.
At the entrance of the church there is an inscribed marble base and other architectural elements.
Also, mainly on the back side of the church, there are millstones and other indications of an olive press.
Inside the ruins, a small oil lamp sometimes burns.
The degree of abandonment is immense, considering the importance of such an archaeological and ecclesiastical monument.
In the area around Panagia Palatiani, as well as in the adjacent field, there are countless ancient architectural elements — a fact that proves that the church stands above the ancient temple of Demeter.
A few meters away from the old Panagia Palatiani, the new Panagia Palatiani has also been built.
