Κυκλάμινα στη Ζια, στην πηγή του Καπηλιανού

Πριν μερικά χρόνια ο πολύ αγαπημένος τέως διευθυντής μου, κ. Αλέκος Μαρκόγλου, βλέποντας κάποιες φωτογραφίες μου με κυκλάμινα με ρώτησε αν γνώριζα πως το Κωακό Κυκλάμινο είχε δικό του "trademark" και ότι το συγκεκριμένο είδος ήταν καταχωρημένο ως "Κωακό" στην παγκόσμια βοτανολογία.

Μου φάνηκε πολύ ενδιαφέρον, προσπάθησα να το ψάξω λίγο αλλά δεν βρήκα τίποτα και θεώρησα ότι, ίσως τελικά, να επρόκειτο για μια μικρή υπερβολή.

Σήμερα θέλησα να γράψω ένα άρθρο στο blog μου για τα κυκλάμινα που έχω εντοπίσει σε διάφορες περιοχές της Κω κι αποφάσισα να κάνω μια πολύ ενδελεχή έρευνα.

30-11-14, Δίκαιος

Ξεκινώντας από τα είδη κυκλάμινου, βρήκα ότι υπάρχουν 21 και 5 μόλις απ' αυτά απαντώνται στην Ελλάδα.
Βλέποντας κάποια από τα είδη, άρχισα να πιστεύω ότι βρίσκομαι στο σωστό δρόμο έρευνας.

Στη μεγαλύτερη ιστοσελίδα, αποκλειστικά για κυκλάμινα (The Cyclamen Society) αναφέρονται, μεταξύ άλλων, τα παρακάτω είδη:

Για τα τέσσερα πρώτα είδη βρήκα δεκάδες αντίστοιχες ελληνικές αναφορές, ακριβείς μεταφράσεις και αναρτήσεις. Στην περίπτωση του cyclamen coum τα πράγματα ήταν λίγο πιο δύσκολα και ασαφή. Παρ'όλο που το μοτίβο μοιάζει να αναφέρεται ολοφάνερα στο Κωακό κυκλάμινο, μόνο ένα ιστολόγιο αναφέρεται στο "Κυκλάμινο το Κώο" {Υπάρχουν επίσης ενδημικά σε συγκεκριμένες περιοχές όπως το κρητικό (C. creticum), το Κώο (C. coum), το ροδιακό (C. rhodium), και στην Κύπρο το κυπριακό (C. cyprium). Στην Περσία ή Ιράν απαντά το περσικό κυκλάμινο (C. persicum), από το οποίο προήλθαν σχεδόν όλες οι καλιεργημένες ποικιλίες.}

Στην ξένη βιβλιογραφία υπάρχουν αρκετές αναφορές για το Kos Cyclamen στ' αγγλικά, ή για το Cyclamen de Kos - Cyclamen coum hiemale στα γαλλικά.

Σε εγκυκλοπαίδειες ή ιστότοπους σχετικούς με ονοματολογία φυτών (π,χ Name that plant) η ετυμολογία των λέξεων cyclamen-κυκλάμινο, αλλά και κωακό (ή κώο)-coum είναι ξεκάθαρη. Η λέξη κυκλάμινο και συνεπακολούθως, η αντίστοιχη αγγλική cyclamen προέρχεται από την ελληνική λέξη κύκλος και από το γεγονός ότι η στεφάνη και ο καρποφόρος βλαστός σχηματίζουν τέλειο κύκλο.

 Όσο για το coum όλοι συμφωνούν ότι προέρχεται από το ελληνικό νησί της Κω, στο Αιγαίο (coum comes from ‘Kos’ (Greek) which refers to the Greek island Kos which is found in the Aegean Sea). Επίσης, στο "Λατινικά για Κηπουρούς" (Latin for Gardeners: Over 3,000 Plant Names Explained), όπου εξηγούνται όλες οι ονομασίες φυτών, εξηγείται πως ο Ιρλανδός βοτανολόγος  Thomas Coulter (1793–1843), μάλλον πρώτος συνέδεσε το cyclamen coum με την Κω (Thomas Coulter (1793–1843), Irish botanist, as in Romneya coulteri coum KOO-um connected with Kos, Greece, as in Cyclamen coum crassicaulis).

Σε πιο σύγχρονα έντυπα υπάρχουν και άλλες θεωρίες, όπως ότι, ναι μεν, στο παρελθόν μπορεί να σήμαινε Κωακής προέλευσης, αλλά όχι πια, καθώς δεν φύεται πια στην Κω (It was in the past suggested that coum might mean "of the Isle of Kos.

Ακόμη και στη wikipedia υπάρχει αναφορά ότι μάλλον η ονομασία coum δεν προέρχεται από το νησί της Κω όπου το είδος δεν φύεται αλλά από το Koa ή Quwe, μια περιοχή στην αρχαία Κιλικία.

Cyclamen repandum ssp. rhodense και το C. hederifolium var. confusum

Στην Κω έχουν καταγραφεί δύο είδη κυκλάμινων σε μια μελέτη πεδίου που έγινε από το Cyclamen Society το 1998.

Το 1996 ο Δρ. David Thomas του Βιολογικού Τμήματος του Πανεπιστημίου του Cardiff, ενώ βρισκόταν σε διακοπές στην Κω, ανακάλυψε ένα άγνωστο σ'αυτόν κυκλάμινο και το ανέφερε στον Chris Grey-Wilson. Από τις φωτογραφίες που είδε ο δεύτερος ταυτοποίησε τα αγριολούλουδα ως Cyclamen repandum ssp.rhodense.

Μετά απ' αυτό φαίνεται πιθανό ότι οι αναφορές του Hansen (1980) για Cyclamen graecum στο Βουνό Λάθρα της Κεφάλου να είναι στην πραγματικότητα Cyclamen repandum ssp.rhodense ή ακόμα και hederifolium. Έτσι, λοιπόν, η ομάδα του Cyclamen Society αποτελούμενη από τους Martyn Denney, Chris Clennett και Brian Cresswell (αρχηγός, βοτανολόγος και φωτογράφος) έφτασαν στην Κω στις 18 Απριλίου του 1998, έμειναν για 6 μέρες σχεδόν, προσπαθώντας να εντοπίσουν αυτά τα δύο είδη κυκλάμινου.

Το Cyclamen repandum ssp. rhodense εντοπίστηκε σε εννέα (9) περιοχές στην Κέφαλο, στη Λάθρα, στο Ζηνί, στο Καμάρι και τον Άγιο Ιωάννη.

23-2-14, Λευκά Κυκλάμινα, Κέφαλος

Το  Cyclamen hederifolium var. confusum εντοπίστηκε στη Ζια, το Λαγούδι και το Αμανιού και μάλιστα αναφέρθηκε πρώτη φορά από τo Meikle το 1978 που το συνάντησε στο Ασφενδιού. Κυρίως, όμως, οι μεγάλοι πληθυσμοί περιορίζονται στη βόρεια πλευρά του Όρους Δίκαιος, ανάμεσα στο Πυλί και τον Ασώματο.

Μετά την πρόσφατη δημοσιοποίηση του άρθρου ο φωτογράφος και εμπειρικός φυσιογνώστης κ. Γιώργος Παστρικός μου έκανε τις εξής επισημάνσεις:

Το Cyclamen coum δεν έχει καταγραφεί από το νησί της Κω. Το όνομα του "coum" αναφέρεται σε μια περιοχή της αρχαίας Κιλικίας στην ΝΑ Τουρκία που αποτελεί και μέρος της εξάπλωσης του φυτού.

Στην Κω μέχρι τώρα έχουν καταγραφεί δύο είδη: Το Cyclamen hederifolium που ανθίζει το φθινόπωρο και το Cyclamen rhodium subsp. rhodium το οποίο έχει καταγραφεί στην Ρόδο και τη Κω. Το Cyclamen rhodium subsp. rhodium είναι πολύ σπάνιο στην Κω και έχει καταγραφεί από ένα σημείο μόνο, κοντά στην Κέφαλο.

A few years ago, my very dear former principal, Mr. Alekos Markoglou, seeing some of my photographs of cyclamens, asked me if I knew that the Kos Cyclamen had its own “trademark” and that this particular species was officially registered as “Koan” in world botany.
I found that very interesting and tried to look it up, but I couldn’t find anything, so I assumed that perhaps it was a small exaggeration.

Today, wanting to write an article on my blog about the cyclamens I’ve found in various parts of Kos, I decided to do a thorough research.

*30-11-14, Dikaios

Starting from the various species of cyclamen, I found that there are 21 in total, and only five of them are found in Greece.
As I studied the different types, I began to believe I was on the right research path.

*26-10-13, In the rock’s crevice, Amanioú

On the largest website dedicated exclusively to cyclamens (The Cyclamen Society), the following species, among others, are mentioned:

*Cyclamen graecum – the Greek cyclamen
*Cyclamen cyprium – the Cypriot cyclamen
*Cyclamen creticum – the Cretan cyclamen

Cyclamen rhodium – the Rhodian cyclamen, or the cyclamen of Rhodes (Cyclamen rhodium subsp. rhodium is white or pale pink with a pink nose and grows in shaded woodland and shrubland on the islands of Rhodes and Kos), and
Cyclamen coum – ??
(Cyclamen coum, family Primulaceae, synonym: Cyclamen orbiculatum)

For the first four species, I found numerous Greek references, translations, and articles.
In the case of Cyclamen coum, however, things were less clear. Although the name pattern seems to point directly to the Koan cyclamen, only one blog referred to it as “the Kos Cyclamen.”
{There are endemic species in certain regions such as the Cretan (C. creticum), the Koan (C. coum), the Rhodian (C. rhodium), and the Cypriot (C. cyprium). In Persia or Iran, there is the Persian cyclamen (C. persicum), from which almost all cultivated varieties originate.}

In foreign literature, there are several references to the Kos Cyclamen in English, or to Cyclamen de Kos – Cyclamen coum hiemale in French.

In encyclopedias and plant name databases (e.g. Name that Plant), the etymology of the words cyclamen and coum (Koan) is clear.
The word cyclamen (from the Greek “kyklos”) refers to the circular shape of its corolla and the coiling fruit stem.

As for coum, all sources agree that it comes from the Greek island of Kos in the Aegean Sea:

“Coum comes from ‘Kos’ (Greek), referring to the Greek island of Kos in the Aegean Sea.”

Furthermore, in Latin for Gardeners: Over 3,000 Plant Names Explained, where all plant names are analyzed, it is noted that the Irish botanist Thomas Coulter (1793–1843) was likely the first to link Cyclamen coum to Kos.

“Thomas Coulter (1793–1843), Irish botanist, as in Romneya coulteri; coum (KOO-um) connected with Kos, Greece, as in Cyclamen coum crassicaulis.”

In more recent publications, other theories appear — that while coum may have once meant of Koan origin, it might no longer refer to Kos, since the species no longer grows there:

Even Wikipedia mentions that coum may not derive from the island of Kos at all, but rather from Koa or Quwe, an ancient region of Cilicia.

Cyclamen repandum ssp. rhodense and C. hederifolium var. confusum

Two species of cyclamen have been recorded on Kos in a field study conducted by the Cyclamen Society in 1998.
In 1996, Dr. David Thomas of the Department of Biology, Cardiff University, while on vacation on Kos, discovered a cyclamen unknown to him and reported it to Chris Grey-Wilson.
From the photographs, Grey-Wilson identified the wildflowers as Cyclamen repandum ssp. rhodense.

After that, it seems likely that the references by Hansen (1980) to Cyclamen graecum on Mount Lathra in Kefalos were actually to Cyclamen repandum ssp. rhodense or even C. hederifolium.
Thus, the Cyclamen Society team — Martyn Denney, Chris Clennett, and Brian Cresswell (leader, botanist, and photographer) — arrived on Kos on April 18, 1998, staying nearly six days, attempting to locate these two species.
Cyclamen repandum ssp. rhodense was found in nine locations in Kefalos — in Lathra, Zini, Kamari, and Agios Ioannis.

Cyclamen hederifolium var. confusum was found in Zia, Lagoudi, and Amanioú. It was first recorded by Meikle in 1978, who had encountered it in Asfendiou.
However, the largest populations are concentrated on the northern side of Mount Dikaios, between Pyli and Asomatos.
