Christos Moskopianos (Church of the Transfiguration), Antimachia

Christos Moskopianos (Church of the Transfiguration), Antimachia
Just west of the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity in Antimachia stands the beautiful chapel of Christos Moskopianos, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ. The chapel celebrates its feast day on 6 August.
The chapel was recorded by the German archaeologist and traveller Ludwig Ross during his visit to the island of Kos in 1844, together with the nearby church of Panagia to Proskynima.
The chapel is dedicated to Christ, while the epithet "Moskopianos" derives from the name of its original owner or founder. Thus, Christos tou Moskopianou ("Christ of Moskopianos") gradually became Christos Moskopianos. Comparable place names are found elsewhere in the Dodecanese, including Miskopianos (also pronounced Meskoupianos) on Tilos, Miskoupianou near Nikia on Nisyros, and the name Moschovias, from which Moschovianos is derived, on Symi.
The scholar Christodoulos Papachristodoulou associated the Nisyrian toponym with the word Piskopi, the medieval name of Tilos, and with the ethnonym Piskopianos, meaning "a person originating from Piskopi." If this interpretation is correct, it may be assumed that a man known as Piskopianos, whose name gradually evolved into Miskopianos and eventually Moskopianos, settled in Kos and became the founder of the church.
Zarakas records Moskopkianos as the name of a lowland area within the parish of the Holy Trinity, where there was also a well supplying drinking water.
Mastoropoulos likewise refers to this well:
"There are examples of vertical wells, such as the ancient marble-built well near the Church of Christos Moskopianos within the settlement."
Inside the chapel are several ancient columns with capitals, together with other reused ancient architectural members (spolia) incorporated into the building.
