Πάνε 9 χρόνια από τότε που ο Λέτο Στογιάνοβιτς Μιντ (Leto Stojanovic Meade) αποφοίτησε από το 1ο ΓΕΛ Κω «Ιπποκράτειο» κι όμως έχει καταφέρει τόσα πολλά!
Όλα ξεκίνησαν όταν οι γονείς του, η Μίλκα Στογιάνοβιτς από την Σερβία και ο Τζέιμς Μιντ από την Αγγλία αποφάσισαν να μετακομίσουν μόνιμα στην Κω. Ο Λέτο ήταν μόλις 11 μηνών. Με μαμά Σέρβα και μπαμπά Άγγλο, ο Λέτο έκανε μια φιλότιμη προσπάθεια με τα ελληνικά και είχε άριστες επιδόσεις μέχρι που κάποια στιγμή στο γυμνάσιο τραυμάτισε πολύ σοβαρά το πόδι του και χρειάστηκε να μείνει εκτός σχολείου σχεδόν ολόκληρη την χρονιά. Στο λύκειο πρόσεχε πολύ μες στην τάξη και συμμετείχε γιατί χρειαζόταν καλό βαθμό στο απολυτήριο. Είχε προβλήματα, όμως, με την ορθογραφία, τα μαθηματικά και τη φυσική κι ενώ είχε βοήθεια από προσωπικούς και οικογενειακούς φίλους, ποτέ δεν πήγε φροντιστήριο και ως εκ τούτου δεν τα πήγε καθόλου καλά στις πανελλήνιες εξετάσεις.
Με επιρροές από την καλλιτέχνιδα μαμά του, ο Λέτο είχε δείξει μία κλίση προς τις τέχνες. Ασχολήθηκε με το θέατρο από πολύ μικρός και συμμετείχε σε παραστάσεις της Α’ Σκηνής του Θεατρικού Εργαστηρίου Δήμου Κω, όπως το Σκλαβί και το Φρανκενστάιν Τζούνιορ.
Παράλληλα, μπαίνει στη ζωή του το Animation (στα ελληνικά αποδίδεται με τους όρους σχεδιοκίνηση, κινούμενα σχέδια, εμψυχοποίηση, εμψύχωση, κινούμενη εικόνα) μέσα από ιαπωνικές δημιουργίες, όπως το Spirited Away του Hayao Miyazaki.
Κάνει αίτηση σε ένα και μόνο Πανεπιστήμιο, στο UCA-University of Creative Arts (Πανεπιστήμιο Δημιουργικών Τεχνών) στο Farnham, στην Αγγλία, γιατί το συγκεκριμένο Πανεπιστήμιο ειδικεύεται στο Animation αλλά και τη δημιουργία ταινιών Animation.
Πριν ακόμη αποφοιτήσει από την Σχολή του φτιάχνει τρεις ταινίες:
1. Water Moves
- Η πρώτη του ταινία γνωρίζει μεγάλη αποδοχή.
- Συμμετέχει στο φεστιβάλ AnimaSyros και σε πολλά φεστιβάλ στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό.
- Παρουσιάζει την ταινία στην Κω.
- Μετά από πρόσκληση, ταξιδεύει στο Hong Kong για την προβολή της ταινίας του.
- Προσκαλείται στην Τουρκία, Βαρκελώνη, Νέα Υόρκη κ.α για την παρουσίαση της ταινίας.
- Υπογράφει συμβόλαιο με την αεροπορική εταιρεία British Airlines για να προβάλλεται η ταινία την ώρα της πτήσης.
- Με τη δεύτερή του ταινία απογειώνεται.
- Συμμετέχει στα πιο σημαντικά φεστιβάλ του κόσμου, όπως το Animest, και το Vis festival. Για να καταλάβετε πόσο δύσκολο είναι αυτό που έχει καταφέρει, αρκεί να πούμε πως σε αυτά τα φεστιβάλ δηλώνουν συμμετοχή 1000-4000 δημιουργοί και γίνονται δεκτές μόνο 10-30 ταινίες και, επίσης, είναι Academy Award ή Bafta qualifying festivals, που σημαίνει ότι αν σε δεχτούν σε τρία τέτοια φεστιβάλ, αυτόματα μπαίνεις στην longlist (μακρά λίστα) για βραβείο Όσκαρ ή Bafta, κι αν κερδίσεις βραβείο σε ένα από τα τρία αυτόματα μπαίνεις στη shortlist (βραχεία λίστα) για βραβείο.
- Μετά από πρόσκληση, ταξιδεύει στο Animest (Anim'est International Animation Festival- Bafta qualifying festival) στο Βουκουρέστι, στην Ρουμανία όπου τον καλούν για να μιλήσει και να παρουσιάσει την ταινία του και φεύγει από κει με ένα βραβείο “Special Mention” (Ειδική Μνεία)
- Τον καλούν στο Kisakes festival στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, στην Τουρκία
- Τον καλούν στο σημαντικότερο φεστιβάλ της Αυστρίας, το Vis festival (Vienna international festival- Academy Award qualifying festival)
3. The fishman
- Με την τρίτη του ταινία καταφέρνει να μπει σε δύο Bafta qualifying festivals, το Animest στη Ρουμανία και το LSFF (London Short Film Festival), ένα Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Animation στο Λονδίνο.
- Παίρνει το Audience award στο Long Distance Festival
- Παίρνει το βραβείο Best Art Direction στα Industry awards της Picasso Pictures
- Κλείνει συμφωνία με την KINOSCOPE (https://kinoscope.org/), που ουσιαστικά είναι το αντίστοιχο Netflix για avant garde short films (ταινίες μικρού μήκους)
Όλα αυτά πριν ακόμη αποφοιτήσει από το Πανεπιστήμιο.
Όλα αυτά ενώ ταυτόχρονα δουλεύει για να μην επιβαρύνει τους γονείς του οικονομικά.
Σειρά έχει το μεταπτυχιακό με θέμα «Directing Animation» (Σκηνοθεσία Κινουμένων Σχεδίων). Διαλέγει τη σημαντικότερη σχολή στην Ευρώπη, την National Film and Television School (NFTS) που βρίσκεται στα Beaconsfield Studios στο Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, στην Αγγλία (όπου παρεμπιπτόντως σήμερα διδάσκει). Σύμφωνα με την κατάταξη του «The Hollywood Reporter» είναι μία από τις 15 κορυφαίες Κινηματογραφικές Σχολές παγκοσμίως. Κάθε χρόνο το NFTS δέχεται περίπου 100 αιτήσεις από τις οποίες μόνο οι 8 εγκρίνονται.
Ο Λέτο, όχι απλά έγινε δεκτός, αλλά ένα μεγάλο μέρος των διδάκτρων καλύφθηκε από τον διάσημο Mark Baker, τον δημιουργό του Peppa Pig (Πέππα:Το γουρουνάκι), ο οποίος ουσιαστικά δέχτηκε να γίνει ο χορηγός της υποτροφίας του.
Παράλληλα από την σχολή του ανατίθεται να διδάσκει παιδιά που βρίσκονται σε δυσχερή οικονομική κατάσταση.
«Seeds of life», VR game
Τη δεύτερη χρονιά του μεταπτυχιακού, καταθέτει με μια φίλη του μια ιδέα για ένα VR game-παιχνίδι Εικονικής Πραγματικότητας (Virtual Reality) σε ένα «διαγωνισμό» για μεγάλη επιχορήγηση. Κερδίζουν τον διαγωνισμό και η ιδέα τους επιχορηγείται με ένα πολύ μεγάλο ποσό. Έτσι γεννιέται το «Seeds of life», στο οποίο ο Λέτο είναι co-director (βοηθός σκηνοθέτη) και το οποίο θα προβάλλεται δωρεάν σε λίγο καιρό στο Steam. Ήδη έχει παρουσιαστεί στη Θεσσαλονίκη, την Αμερική και τη Νότια Κορέα. Ο Λέτο προσκλήθηκε στη Νότια Κορέα, καλεσμένος του φεστιβάλ για να παρουσιάσει το VR παιχνίδι του.
Και μετά έρχεται η 4η ταινία του.
Συμμετείχε ως τώρα στο Piccolo Festival Animazione, στην Ιταλία και προβλήθηκε στις 27 Νοεμβρίου 2022 στο London International Animation Festival, στο Barbican. (Έκτοτε η ταινία σάρωσε τα βραβεία)
Μπορώ να σας διαβεβαιώσω ότι πρόκειται για ένα δεκάλεπτο αριστούργημα με θέμα τη σχέση ενός παιδιού με τον πατέρα του. Τα πρώτα χρόνια της ζωής του ένα παιδί βλέπει τον γονιό σαν γίγαντα ή σαν «Θεό» και η ταινία με πολύ ευαίσθητο τρόπο αποκαλύπτει τι γίνεται όταν αυτός ο γίγαντας απομυθοποιείται και μετατρέπεται σε κοινό θνητό στα μάτια του μικρού παιδιού, όταν οι γονείς παύουν να είναι τα είδωλα που κάποτε ήταν και επιτέλους υπάρχουν επί ίσοις όροις στην οικογένεια.
Μια πολύ τρυφερή ταινία, με υπέροχη μουσική και συγκινητικό ηθικό δίδαγμα.
Ο Λέτο συνεχίζει τις πολύπλευρες δράσεις του. Συμμετέχει πάλι σε διαγωνισμό για επιχορήγηση για το trailer του Φεστιβάλ London International Animation Festival και για μια ακόμη φορά κερδίζει τον διαγωνισμό και την χρηματοδότηση και δημιουργεί το trailer LIAF
Επισκέπτεται τα BBC studios για να παρουσιάσει την ταινία του και τις φιγούρες του Death of the Gods στον τότε Πρίγκιπα Κάρολο (νυν Βασιλιά της Αγγλίας) και στην σύζυγό του Camilla (νυν Βασίλισσα της Αγγλίας).
Κατά τη διάρκεια του lockdown, με εθελοντική εργασία, έφτιαξε ένα βίντεο για τον Οργανισμό Give Blood UK, με σκοπό να ενθαρρύνει αιμοδότες να δώσουν αίμα, σε μια εποχή που δεν υπήρχαν αρκετές δωρεές. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XQdG3Lm42d8

Leto, Animation, Festivals and Awards: Chasing the Dream from Kos to England. Read his story!
It has been 9 years since Leto Stojanovic Meade graduated from the 1st General High School of Kos “Hippokrateio”, and yet he has already achieved so much!
Everything began when his parents, Milka Stojanovic from Serbia and James Meade from England, decided to move permanently to Kos. Leto was only 11 months old. With a Serbian mother and an English father, Leto made a sincere effort with the Greek language and had excellent school performance, until at one point in middle school he seriously injured his leg and had to stay out of school for almost the entire year. In high school he paid close attention in class and participated actively because he needed a good graduation grade. However, he had difficulties with spelling, mathematics, and physics, and although he had help from personal and family friends, he never attended private tutoring classes and therefore did very poorly in the national university entrance exams.
Influenced by his artist mother, Leto had already shown an inclination toward the arts. He became involved in theatre from a very young age and participated in productions of the First Stage of the Municipal Theatre Workshop of Kos, such as Sklavi and Frankenstein Junior.
At the same time, Animation entered his life through Japanese creations such as Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki.
He applied to one and only one university, University for the Creative Arts, because this specific university specializes in Animation and the creation of animated films.
Even before graduating from university, he created three films:
1. Water Moves
His first film received great acclaim.
It participated in the Animasyros International Animation Festival and in many festivals in Greece and abroad.
He presented the film in Kos.
Following an invitation, he traveled to Hong Kong for the screening of his film.
He was invited to Turkey, Barcelona, New York and elsewhere to present the film.
He signed a contract with British Airways so that the film could be shown during flights.
2. Losing the Sponge
With his second film, his career truly took off.
He participated in some of the world’s most important festivals, such as the Anim'est International Animation Festival and the VIS Vienna Shorts festival. To understand how difficult this achievement is, it is enough to say that 1,000–4,000 creators submit entries to these festivals, while only 10–30 films are accepted. In addition, these are Academy Award or BAFTA qualifying festivals, meaning that if you are accepted into three such festivals, you are automatically included in the longlist for an Oscar or BAFTA award, and if you win an award at one of the three, you automatically enter the shortlist.
Following an invitation, he traveled to the Anim’est International Animation Festival in Bucharest, Romania, where he was invited to speak and present his film, and he left with a “Special Mention” award.
He was invited to the Kisakes Festival in Istanbul, Turkey.
He was also invited to Austria’s most important festival, VIS Vienna Shorts, an Academy Award qualifying festival.
3. The Fishman
With his third film, he succeeded in entering two BAFTA qualifying festivals: Anim’est in Romania and the London Short Film Festival, an international animation festival in London.
He won the Audience Award at the Long Distance Festival.
He won the Best Art Direction award at the Industry Awards of Picasso Pictures.
He reached an agreement with KINOSCOPE, which is essentially the equivalent of Netflix for avant-garde short films.
All of this before even graduating from university.
All of this while simultaneously working so as not to financially burden his parents.
Next came his postgraduate studies in “Directing Animation.” He chose Europe’s most important school, the National Film and Television School, located at Beaconsfield Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is one of the 15 top film schools worldwide. Every year, the NFTS receives around 100 applications, of which only 8 are accepted.
Leto was not only accepted, but a large part of his tuition fees was covered by Mark Baker, creator of Peppa Pig, who essentially agreed to sponsor his scholarship.
At the same time, the school assigned him to teach children facing financial hardship.
“Seeds of Life” – VR Game
During the second year of his postgraduate studies, he and a friend submitted an idea for a VR (Virtual Reality) game to a competition offering a major grant. They won the competition, and their idea received substantial funding. Thus, “Seeds of Life” was born, in which Leto serves as co-director, and which will soon be available for free on Steam. It has already been presented in Thessaloniki, the United States, and South Korea. Leto was invited to South Korea as a guest of the festival to present his VR game.
And then came his fourth film: Death of the Gods
You cannot watch Leto’s latest film yet, as it is currently participating in festivals. So far, it has participated in the Piccolo Festival Animazione in Italy and was scheduled to be screened on November 27 at the London International Animation Festival at the Barbican.
I can assure you that it is a ten-minute masterpiece about the relationship between a child and his father. During the early years of life, a child sees a parent as a giant or as a “God,” and the film sensitively reveals what happens when this giant becomes demystified and turns into an ordinary mortal in the eyes of the young child — when parents cease to be the idols they once were and finally exist on equal terms within the family.
A very tender film, with wonderful music and a moving moral message.
Leto continues his multifaceted activities. He once again participated in a competition for funding to create the trailer for the London International Animation Festival, and once again he won both the competition and the funding, creating the LIAF trailer:
He visited the BBC Studios to present his film and the figures from Death of the Gods to then-Prince Charles (now King Charles III) and his wife Camilla (now Queen Camilla).
During the lockdown, through volunteer work, he created a video for Give Blood UK aimed at encouraging blood donors to donate blood at a time when donations were insufficient.
