ΑΗ ΓΙΑΝΝΗΣ Ο ΚΟΥΤΣΟΣ, ΚΕΦΑΛΟΣ

Ο Άη Γιάννης ο Κουτσός (Γενέσιο Ιωάννου του Προδρόμου) βρίσκεται στην Κέφαλο, για την ακρίβεια λίγο πριν μπούμε στο χωριό της Κεφάλου, ακριβώς κάτω από το Κάστρο.

Ανήκει στην Ενορία Εισοδίων Θεοτόκου της Κεφάλου, και γιορτάζει στις 24 Ιουνίου.

Σύμφωνα με το βιβλίο "Ιερά Μητρόπολις Κώου και Νισύρου Παρελθόν και παρόν-Ανδρέα Ιωσήφ Χατζημιχαήλ (χορηγός εκδόσεως Δήμος Κω, 2016)", ο κτήτορας είναι ο Ιωάννης Γεωργαρής (1993).

Βέβαια, ο Μητροπολίτης Καρπάθιος στο "Εκκλησία Κω Δωδεκανήσου"-Τόμος Πρώτος, βιβλίον Δεύτερον, Αθήνα 1969 , αναφέρει εκκλησάκι Ιωάννη του Προδρόμου (Γενέσιον) στη θέση Σουλούνι, με άγνωστο κτήτορα. Αναφέρει δε, ότι επισκευές στο εξωκκλήσι έκανε ο Νικόλαος Γεωργαράς. 

Υπάρχουν δύο τρόποι πρόσβασης στο εκκλησάκι του Άη Γιάννη. Ο ένας είναι από τον κεντρικό ανηφορικό δρόμο με τις στροφές που βγαίνει στο χωριό' λίγο πριν βγείτε στο χωριό μπορείτε στα δεξιά σας ν' ανεβείτε τη σκάλα με τα πολλά σκαλοπάτια.

Ο άλλος δρόμος είναι από το χωριό, εκεί δίπλα στο πάρκινγκ ξεκινάει ένα μικρό κατηφορικό μονοπατάκι, σχετικά εύκολο και σας βγάζει απευθείας στην αυλή της εκκλησίας.

Το εκκλησάκι περιβάλλεται από πολλούς ΑΘΑΝΑΤΟΥΣ, Agave Americana (Αγαύη η αμερικανική).

Εκκρεμεί να βρω μια απάντηση για ποιο λόγο του δόθηκε το προσωνύμιο "Κουτσός". Συνήθως αυτά τα προσωνύμια προκύπτουν από κάποια σωματική ιδιότητα του ιδιοκτήτη, αλλά υποθέτω πως τότε θα λεγόταν "του Κουτσού" και όχι "Κουτσός".

Saint John the Koutsos (limping), Kefalos

Saint John the Koutsos (the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist) is located in Kefalos, more precisely just before entering the village of Kefalos, directly below the Castle.

The chapel belongs to the Parish of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in Kefalos and celebrates its feast day on 24 June.

According to the book The Holy Metropolis of Kos and Nisyros: Past and Present by Andreas Iosif Chatzimichail (publication sponsored by the Municipality of Kos, 2016), the founder of the chapel is recorded as Ioannis Georgaris (1993).

However, Metropolitan Karpathios, in The Church of Kos in the Dodecanese, Volume I, Book II (Athens, 1969), mentions a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist (Nativity) at the location known as Soulouni, with an unknown founder. He also notes that repairs to the chapel were carried out by Nikolaos Georgaras.

There are two ways to reach the chapel of Saint John. One is from the main uphill road with its winding bends leading to the village; shortly before entering the village, visitors can climb a staircase with numerous steps on the right-hand side.

The other route starts from the village itself. Near the parking area, a small downhill footpath begins; it is relatively easy to follow and leads directly to the church courtyard.

The chapel is surrounded by numerous century plants (Agave americana).

It remains to be determined why the chapel was given the epithet "Koutsos." Such epithets usually derive from a physical characteristic of the owner or founder. However, if this were the case, one might expect the designation to be "of Koutsos" rather than simply "Koutsos."
