SUNSET AT VAGI… BY FAR THE BEST ON THE ISLAND OF KOS
A little after Mastichari, and beyond the beach of Protokaravos, lies the area of Vagi (Akti Ammoudianou), which is known mainly for the oil factory — naturally, the factory is a reason to avoid this particular beach, since sewage and some industrial waste make it unsuitable for swimming, especially when there are so many beautiful beaches on the island. Somewhere around there begins the region of Atsas, named after the river of the same name.
The area of Vagi took its name from the vagia tree (vagi = small vagia = palm tree), as it is located west of St. John of Perigyalitis, near a ravine where these trees likely once grew. You park your car at the entrance of the factory, and since there is always a guard there, you may be asked what you want in the area and may even need to request permission to go down to the beach. However, if you overlook all this (the factory’s dog may also bark persistently) and make the effort to walk down to the beach, you will be guaranteedly rewarded.
The largest pier on the island awaits you there, ready to be walked along and photographed. Its existence is likely related to the factory, though I do not know if it is still in use. According to Mr. Nikos Ieromnimonas, the pier is a port construction — the most suitable type for coasts with low sediment — as it leaves coastal currents free and does not interrupt the coastal circulation.
No matter what season of the year you visit this pier in Vagi, do not forget to combine it with the sunset, because truly, every time I have gone, the sunset in the area — especially with the pier as part of the scene — is unique!
I wish there were words to describe the colors and the serenity… I’ll let the images speak!
