ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑ ΣΤΥΛΩΤΗ, ΚΕΦΑΛΟΣ

Η Παναγία Στυλωτή είναι περιοχή στην Κέφαλο, δυτικά του Αγίου Ιωάννη και του βουνού Θυμιανός, όπου βρίσκεται η ομώνυμη εκκλησία, αφιερωμένη στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου. Ανήκει στην ενορία των Εισοδίων Θεοτόκου Κεφάλου και γιορτάζει στις 15 Αυγούστου.

Σύμφωνα με το Ζάρακα υπάρχει και ομώνυμη βρύση στην περιοχή.
Το όνομα απαντά σε παραλλαγές: Στυλωτή, Στυλλωτή, Στηλωτή και Στηλλωτή και μπορεί να σχετίζεται με στύλους (αρχαίους κίονες δηλαδή) ή με βράχο, πιθανά επειδή δεσπόζει, εξέχει ή στηρίζει σαν στήλος, καθώς ένα τοπωνύμιο στο Πυλί -Στηλλωτή-έχει αυτή την ετυμολογία κατά τον Σκανδαλίδη.

Πιο πιθανό βέβαια, θεωρώ το ενδεχόμενο να ονομάστηκε Στυλωτή λόγω αρχαίας μαρμάρινης στήλης (αμφικιονίσκος) που βρέθηκε εκεί και που τώρα δεσπόζει στο κέντρο της εκκλησίας.

Ο εσπερινός και το πανηγύρι που ακολουθεί στην Παναγία τη Στυλωτή είναι από τα πλέον δημοφιλή αφού χιλιάδες κόσμου συρρέει για να απολαύσει τη φημισμένη ροβυθάδα κοκκινιστή και λεμονάτη την παραμονή της γιορτής που είναι νηστεία, και γίδα βραστή και κοκκινιστή ανήμερα που είναι το πανηγύρι, αλλά και λουκουμάδες και γλέντι μέχρι πρωίας.

Αρκετά αρχαία αρχιτεκτονικά μέλη διακοσμούν το εσωτερικό και το εξωτερικό του ναού.

Η εκκλησία (κτ. Ιω. Καρπάθιος) βρίσκεται σε εξαιρετική τοποθεσία με υπέροχη θέα προς την ανεμογεννήτριες.

Πρόκειται για ένα από τα πιο γραφικά εκκλησάκια της Κεφάλου.

Στο τεράστιο προαύλιό της δεσπόζει μια χαρουπιά. Την πρώτη φορά που επισκεφτήκαμε την εκκλησία το 2012, κάποιος κύριος μάζευε χαρούπια κι έτσι είχα κι εγώ την ευκαιρία να δοκιμάσω γα πρώτη φορά την πεντανόμιστη "σοκολάτα των φτωχών".

Panagia Styloti, Kefalos

Panagia Styloti is an area in Kefalos, west of Agios Ioannis and Mount Thymianos, where the church of the same name is located, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It belongs to the parish of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in Kefalos and celebrates on August 15th.

According to Zarakas, there is also a spring with the same name in the area. The name appears in several variations – Styloti, Stylloti, Stiloti, Stilloti – and may be related either to “columns” (ancient pillars) or to a rock, possibly because it stands out or supports like a pillar. A similar toponym in Pyli – “Stilloti” – has that same etymology, according to Skandalidis.

More likely, however, the name derives from an ancient marble column (amphikioniskos) found there, which today stands prominently in the center of the church.

The evening vespers and the festival that follows at Panagia Styloti are among the most popular on the island. Thousands of people gather to enjoy the famous chickpea stew (revithada), cooked in tomato sauce or with lemon, on the eve of the feast (a fasting day), and on the day of the celebration itself, goat stew and goat in tomato sauce are served, along with loukoumades (fried honey pastries) and music that lasts until dawn.

Several ancient architectural elements decorate both the interior and exterior of the church:

• parts of an arch cornice

• a trapetos (a stone press used for crushing olive kernels)

The church (built by Ioannis Karpathios) is located in an outstanding spot, offering beautiful views toward the wind turbines. It is truly one of the most picturesque chapels in Kefalos.

In its spacious courtyard stands a large carob tree. The first time we visited the church in 2012, a local man was collecting carobs, and that’s how I had the chance to taste for the first time the delicious so-called “poor man’s chocolate.”
