THE LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES (Caretta caretta) OF THE AEGEAN (KASTELLORIZO)
I had heard stories that here in Kos as well there are beaches where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, but I never saw one and never heard anyone say they had. (Well, that’s not entirely true — once, last year, Semi at Kavo Paradiso told me he had found eggs.) On the contrary, I have often heard of dead caretta caretta turtles being found washed up on the shore.
All these impressions were overturned when I went to Kastellorizo. There, five caretta caretta turtles have found refuge in the island’s harbor. The locals “warned” us that we would get tired of seeing them, and indeed we did. They are very friendly and come so close to the pier that you can easily reach out your hand and touch them.
It is unknown how dangerous it may be (I suspect very) for them to swim undisturbed among fishing boats and huge yachts. However, the island’s residents take good care of them, and on many occasions they have managed to free and save them from nets and plastic bags, which can be fatal for the turtles, as they mistake them for their favorite delicacy: jellyfish.
Many locals, using nets, clean the harbor daily of garbage and plastics so that the turtles can “stroll around” safely, very close to unsuspecting tourists who, astonished, cannot stop taking photos.
Residents of the area have witnessed very expressive games and courtship between pairs of turtles in the sea area between Kastellorizo and the Blue Cave.
I do not know if there is any other case in Greece where caretta caretta turtles choose a busy harbor as their refuge, but for us it was a wonderful sight — and one of the reasons to visit Kastellorizo.
