Ophrys cinereophila — the orchid that loves ash
As I have already mentioned in previous articles (and will mention many times again), 58 orchid species have been recorded on Kos.
Together with the previous records:
-
Orchis papilionacea (Butterfly Orchid)
-
Serapias (Serapias)
-
Orchis italica (Italian Orchid – “Satyr”)
-
Ophrys speculum (Mirror Orchid)
-
Ophrys sicula (Yellow Orchid)
-
Ophrys sitiaca (the Ophrys of Sitia on Kos)
we have now reached seven species. Only 51 more remain to be located and recorded.
Scientific name: Ophrys cinereophila Paulus & Gack 1998
Synonym: Ophrys fusca subsp. cinereophila (Paulus & Gack) Faurh. 2002
Family: Orchidaceae
A slender and short plant, mainly distributed in southeastern Greece, with its center in the South Aegean. Its broader distribution includes western and southwestern Asia Minor.
It is relatively easy to distinguish thanks to its dense, spiral inflorescence bearing 2–10 small flowers, each less than one centimeter in size. The main flowering month of this small orchid is March.
The specific photographs were taken on February 8 at Potami of Mesaria, on Kos.
According to the etymology given by Allen B. Martin, cinereophila means “lover of ash” — from the Greek word phila (friend/lover) and the Latin cinereus (ashen, grey, resembling ashes). The orchid is said to have been found growing in volcanic ash, hence its name.
cinereophila: ash(es) + loves. It was reportedly found growing in volcanic ash. Alternatively, the name could also suggest “loving the grey (ashen) color,” from cinereus.
I would like to thank Antonis Kostoglakes, Andrea Simunkova, and Esther Skoumbourdi, who, through the group “Nature & Wildlife of Kos Island,” assist me with identifications.
