THE COATS OF ARMS OF NERATZIA CASTLE
The surrounding wall (cinta urbana) was built, as evidenced by the coats of arms of the Grand Masters embedded at various points of the enclosure, between 1391 and 1396, using every kind of ancient material found in the area.
On the eastern side, parallel to the coast, the entire defensive line is missing, where the gate to the sea should have been. However, at the SE corner (opposite the Aktaion) a kind of turret remains. On its side, facing Hippocrates Street, is embedded a plaque with three coats of arms: on the left, that of the Grand Master of Rhodes, De Heredia (1376–1396), depicting three castles with three towers each; in the middle, with the cross, that of the Order; and on the right, that of the Lieutenant (Baglivo or Luogotenente) of Kos, Schlegelholtz (1386–1412), showing two radiating axes.

-

-

De Miguy, Orsini, del Carretto, Schlegelholtz.
At the SE corner of the inner castle, set into an arched plaited frame, there is another coat of arms of Pierre d’Aubusson, half-destroyed. The tassels indicating his ecclesiastical office can still be discerned.
The next two are the coats of arms of the governor (Preceptor) Fantino Quirini (1431–1453).
The coat of arms of Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson (1476–1503). At the center is the shield with the two plain crosses of the Order and the two anchor crosses of the Grand Master. To the right and left are two rows of ten tassels each, the insignia of the Cardinal, with which Pope Innocent VIII honored Pierre d’Aubusson in 1489 for his services to the Order. Missing from this coat of arms are the cardinal’s hat, the pastoral cross, and one more tassel.

The main entrance of the castle (Castle Gate). Above the marble lintel, inside a rectangular frame, are three coats of arms: the left one, with the anchor cross, is that of Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson (1476–1503); the middle one, with the plain cross, is that of the Order; and the right one, with the upright lion, is that of the local commander Carmadino (1471–1495). Beneath the coats of arms, the inscription reads: “Frater Eduardus de Carmadino Preceptor Langonis” and the date M.CCCC.LXXVIII (1478).
