PSILO VOUNO – THE HIGHEST PEAK ON KOS (846 m)
The most popular summit of Mount Dikaios on the island of Kos is Christos, with its small chapel at 843 m — probably because it is relatively easy to access through one of the few marked trails.
Perhaps for this reason, people mistakenly believe it to be the highest peak of Dikaios, while in reality the highest is Psilo Vouno at 846 m, located west of the chapel of Christos.
The Ascent
This is one of the toughest and most demanding routes on the island. It is not unusual for a group of fifty hikers to set out, only for barely a dozen to reach the summit. Do not attempt it without a guide, and be prepared for a true test of endurance.
The trail begins at Panagia Monagri, heading uphill to the right after the spring at Monagri.
The first interesting stop, due to its unique geomorphology, is Plakeri, located on the southern side of Mount Dikaios. It is a descending, terrace-like formation of stone slabs.
The Geology
The main mass of Mount Dikaios is composed of limestones and marbles, along with large bodies of plutonites and volcanic rocks. Along the route, one encounters:
-
The quarry
-
The caves
-
The lime kiln (asvestokamino)
-
The “Cyclopean” walls
The Summit
At the top of Psilo Vouno stand the ruins of the small chapel of Agia Pokou, which according to Karpathiou was originally dedicated to Agia Fotini.
From here, on a clear day, the view is breathtaking.
It is also a place where we have encountered some of the rarest flowers on Kos, such as Viola heldreichiana, and Muscari macrocarpum, which we found at Plakeri, along with dozens of others like Lamium amplexicaule, Lamium purpureum, Arabis verna, and many more (I will dedicate a separate post to these).
Hiking in the Mist
Very often, Mount Dikaios disappears into the fog. If you are lucky, you may “see” truly haunting images. The word see is in quotation marks, because in our case, visibility was no more than 50 centimeters!
✨ My photograph from Plakeri was featured in the pages of the travel magazine Greece Is of the newspaper “Kathimerini,” along with a tribute to the activities of our hiking group.
