ΚΑΤΙΝΑ ΠΑΠΠΟΥΛΗ, Η ΜΕΓΑΛΗ ΠΑΡΑΔΟΣΙΑΚΗ ΕΡΜΗΝΕΥΤΡΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΚΩ

Την Κατίνα Παππούλη τη γνώρισα τη δεκαετία του '90 στο Παραδοσιακό Σπίτι της Αντιμάχειας να υφαίνει στον αργαλειό καθώς παρέδιδε εκεί μαθήματα υφαντικής. Λίγα χρόνια μετά είχα την τιμή να παρουσιάσω τη ζωή και το έργο της κατά τη διάρκεια της βράβευσής της στην κατηγορία "Μουσική" στα Βραβεία Τιμής 2005 από την Επαρχιακή Επιτροπή Πολιτισμού, της οποίας ήμουν μέλος.

Όταν της απενεμήθη το βραβείο, την άκουσα συγκινημένη να λέει "Ευχαριστώ την Επιτροπή που με βραβεύσανε. Εγώ είμαι ένας ασήμαντος άνθρωπος και δεν μου έπρεπε..." Η μεγάλη αυτή παραδοσιακή ερμηνεύτρια έφυγε χθες από τη ζωή, αλλά θα μας συντροφεύει πάντα με τη μουσική της και θα αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της παράδοσης και της λαογραφίας του νησιού μας. Καλό της ταξίδι...

Η Αικατερίνη ( Κατίνα) Παππούλη γεννήθηκε στην περιοχή Βαλλάρη στην Αντιμάχεια στις 2-2-1937. Πέμπτο παιδί από τα έξι του Σταμάτη Σακκέλη και της Παρασκευής Πόγια. Σε ηλικία τεσσάρων ετών μένει άστεγη αφού οι Ιταλοί κατεδάφισαν ολόκληρο τον οικισμό για την επέκταση του τότε στρατιωτικού αεροδρομίου. Έτσι αναγκάζονται αφού πρώτα βρουν προσωρινά στέγη στο ξωκλήσι του Αη-Γιώργη να εγκατασταθούν στην Αντιμάχεια μαζί φυσικά με την οικογένειά της. Τα χρόνια όμως που ακολουθούν είναι πολύ φτωχά και δύσκολα και για να βοηθήσει την οικογένειά της θα φύγει για να δουλέψει ως οικιακή βοηθός στην Αθήνα. Εκεί ακούει πολύ ραδιόφωνο και έτσι αρχίζει να μαθαίνει και να τραγουδά όλα τα δημοτικά τραγούδια που ακούγονταν τότε. Το 1956 θα επιστρέψει στην Αντιμάχεια και μετά από τρία χρόνια παντρεύεται τον Χρήστο Παππούλη με τον οποίο αποκτά δυο γιούς, τον Στέλιο και τον Κυριάκο. 

Για κάποια χρόνια θα τραγουδά ερασιτεχνικά σε φιλικούς και συγγενικούς γάμους, κατά την διάρκεια του ξυρίσματος του γαμπρού ή το στόλισμα της νύφης. Από το 1978 θα είναι στο μουσικό συγκρότημα του βιολιστή και αδελφού της Γιώργου Σακκέλη με τον Σαράντο Χαρμαντά στο ακορντεόν, τον Γιώργο Κιλιμάτο αρχικά στο λαγούτο τον οποίο αντικαθιστά ο Νίκος Παπούλης το 1980. Μετά τον θάνατο του αδελφού της το 1988 θα συνεχίσει για λίγο με το ίδιο μουσικό σχήμα με βιολιστή τον Μανόλη Βαρκά. Τα επόμενα χρόνια θα τραγουδά πλέον μόνο τιμητικά σε κάποιες εκδηλώσεις. Το 1971 συμμετέχει σε ηχογράφηση του Σίμων Καρά στην Αντιμάχεια ενώ το 1976 ηχογραφεί στον ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό της Ρόδου 18 τραγούδια, το 1997 ηχογραφεί μερικά τραγούδια σε CD της FM RECORDS, το 2000, το 2004 και το 2008 συμμετέχει αντίστοιχα σε CD του Δήμου Ηρακλειδών, της νομαρχίας Δωδεκανήσου και του πολιτιστικού συλλόγου Αντιμάχειας.

Το βιογραφικό της Κατίνας Παππούλη όπως είχε αναγνωσθεί στην απονομή των βραβείων τιμής της Επαρχιακής Επιτροπής Πολιτισμού το 2005, όταν της απενεμήθη το βραβείο για τη μουσική.

Η Αικατερίνη Σακέλλη- Παππούλη γεννήθηκε στην Αντιμάχεια το 1937 στην περιοχή Βαλάρη. Σε ηλικία τριών ετών εκδιώχτηκε από τους Ιταλούς μαζί με όλες τις οικογένειες που ζούσαν στον Βαλάρη, καθώς η περιοχή χρησιμοποιήθηκε για την κατασκευή του αεροδρομίου. Μαζί με την οικογένειά της εγκαταστάθηκε στην περιοχή Αγίου Γεωργίου περίπου 5 χλμ απ' το χωριό. Αργότερα αναγκάστηκαν να ζήσουν σε σπήλαια της περιοχής αφού κι από εκεί εκδιώχτηκαν από τους προερχόμενους από την Κρήτη Γερμανούς. Με την απελευθέρωση ήρθαν στο χωριό με πολλές δυσκολίες καθώς τους παραχωρήθηκε σπίτι από το κράτος όπως επίσης και σε 11 άλλες άστεγες οικογένειες του Βαλάρη.

Παιδί 8μελούς οικογένειας πέρασε δύσκολα μεταπολεμικά χρόνια. Το 1949 αναγκάστηκε να φύγει στην Αθήνα για δουλειά γιατί έπρεπε να βοηθήσει τη φτωχή της οικογένεια. Στην Αθήνα ακούει πολύ ραδιόφωνο και έχοντας ταλέντο αρχίζει να τραγουδά και να μαθαίνει όλα τα παραδοσιακά τραγούδια. Το 1956 επιστρέφει στην Αντιμάχεια. Το 1959 παντρεύεται το Χρήστο Παππούλη (αγρότη στο επάγγελμα) και μαζί του αποκτά δύο αγόρια. Έχοντας αδερφό βιολιτζή, το Γεώργιο Σακέλλη, αρχίζει να τραγουδά μαζί του ερασιτεχνικά σε διάφορες κοινωνικές εκδηλώσεις, γάμους και πανηγύρια. Αργότερα το κάνει πιο συστηματικά και σχεδόν επαγγελματικά. Συμμετάσχει σε πολλές εκδηλώσεις σε Ρόδο και Αθήνα και ηχογραφεί με τον Σίμωνα Καρρά το 1971 ορισμένα τραγούδια για την ελληνική ραδιοφωνία. Το 1976 ηχογραφεί με το Γιάννη Κουλιανό-βιολί, τον Αντώνη Γερασκλή-λαούτο και το Σταμάτη Ροδίτη,-σαντούρι 18 τραγούδια στο ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό της Ρόδου. Την ίδια χρονιά συμμετέχει σε τηλεοπτική εκπομπή του Παναγιώτη Μυλωνά που γυρίζεται στην Αντιμάχεια. Δέκα χρόνια αργότερα ηχογραφεί συμμετέχοντας σε cd αφιέρωμα στη Δωδεκανησιακή μουσική παράδοση- ορισμένα τραγούδια με τους Γαβριήλ Γιαλίζη κ Μανόλη Πόγια. Τιμητικά πλέον συμμετέχει σε ηχογραφήσεις της Νομαρχίας Δωδεκανήσου και του Αρχείου Ελληνικής μουσικής. Συμμετέχει σε διάφορες πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις που γίνονται στην Αντιμάχεια. Τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια εργάζεται στο παραδοσιακό σπίτι της Αντιμάχειας και παραδίδει μαθήματα υφαντικής που διοργανώνουν ο πολιτιστικός σύλλογος Αντιμάχειας και ο Δήμος Ηρακλειδών.

Το συγκινητικό βίντεο, αφιέρωμα στην Κατίνα Παππούλη, σκηνοθέτησε για λογαριασμό της ΕΕΠ ο Μάνθος Αρμπελιάς. Στο βίντεο αυτό, η αείμνηστη Κατίνα θυμάται τα χρόνια που ασχολήθηκε με τον αργαλειό και το τραγούδι.

Katina Pappouli, Kos' Great Traditional Folk Singer

I first met Katina Pappouli in the 1990s at the Traditional House of Antimachia, where she was weaving on a traditional loom while teaching weaving classes. A few years later, I had the honor of presenting her life and work during the ceremony in which she received the 2005 Honorary Awards in the category of Music, presented by the Provincial Cultural Committee, of which I was a member.

When she accepted the award, I remember her saying, deeply moved:

"I thank the Committee for honouring me. I am just an insignificant person, and I didn't deserve this..."

This remarkable interpreter of the traditional music of Kos passed away yesterday, but her songs will always remain with us. Her voice will forever be an inseparable part of the island's musical heritage and folklore.

May she rest in peace.

Aikaterini (Katina) Pappouli was born in the Vallari area of Antimachia on 2 February 1937. She was the fifth of the six children of Stamatis Sakkelis and Paraskevi Pogia.

At the age of four, she lost her home when the Italian authorities demolished the entire settlement to expand the military airport. After temporarily finding shelter in the chapel of Agios Georgios, the family eventually settled in Antimachia.

The years that followed were marked by poverty and hardship. In order to help support her family, she left for Athens to work as a domestic helper. There she spent countless hours listening to the radio, gradually learning and singing the traditional folk songs that were broadcast at the time.

In 1956, she returned to Antimachia, and three years later married Christos Pappoulis, with whom she had two sons, Stelios and Kyriakos.

For several years she sang as an amateur at weddings of relatives and friends, performing the traditional songs that accompanied the groom's shaving ceremony and the preparation of the bride.

In 1978, she joined the musical group of her brother, violinist Giorgos Sakkelis, together with Sarantos Charmantas on accordion and Giorgos Kilimatos on lute, who was replaced in 1980 by Nikos Papoulis.

After her brother's death in 1988, she continued performing for a short period with the same ensemble, this time accompanied by violinist Manolis Varkas. In later years she appeared only as an honorary guest at selected cultural events.

Her recording career included:

• 1971: participation in a field recording by Simon Karas in Antimachia.
• 1976: recording eighteen traditional songs at the Rhodes Radio Station.
• 1997: participation in a CD released by FM Records.
• 2000, 2004 and 2008: participation in CDs produced respectively by the Municipality of Irakleides, the Prefecture of the Dodecanese, and the Cultural Association of Antimachia.

Aikaterini Sakkeli-Pappouli was born in Antimachia in 1937, in the area known as Vallari.

At the age of three, she and every other family living in Vallari were forced by the Italian authorities to leave their homes, as the area was requisitioned for the construction of the airport. Together with her family, she settled near Agios Georgios, about five kilometres from the village.

Later, they were forced to live in caves in the surrounding area after being expelled once again—this time by German troops that had arrived from Crete. Following the Liberation, the family eventually returned to the village, where the Greek state provided them with a house, along with eleven other homeless families from Vallari.

Growing up in a family of eight, she endured the hardships of the difficult post-war years.

In 1949, she was obliged to move to Athens for work in order to help support her impoverished family. While living there, she listened constantly to the radio and, thanks to her natural musical talent, learned to sing a vast repertoire of traditional folk songs.

She returned to Antimachia in 1956 and, in 1959, married Christos Pappoulis, a farmer by profession. Together they raised two sons.

Having her brother Giorgos Sakkelis, a gifted violinist, she began singing with him at weddings, village festivals and other social celebrations. What started as an amateur pastime gradually evolved into a much more systematic, almost professional, musical career.

She participated in numerous cultural events in Rhodes and Athens and, in 1971, recorded traditional songs with the renowned musicologist Simon Karas for Greek Radio.

In 1976, accompanied by Giannis Koulianos on violin, Antonis Gerasklis on lute and Stamatis Roditis on santouri, she recorded eighteen songs at the Rhodes Radio Station. That same year, she also appeared in a television programme by Panagiotis Mylonas, filmed in Antimachia.

Ten years later, she participated in a CD dedicated to the musical tradition of the Dodecanese, recording songs together with Gavriil Yializis and Manolis Pogias.

In later years she took part, as an honorary contributor, in recordings produced by the Prefecture of the Dodecanese and the Archive of Greek Music. She also continued to participate in numerous cultural events held in Antimachia.

For the last fifteen years of her working life, she was employed at the Traditional House of Antimachia, where she taught the art of traditional weaving through courses organized by the Cultural Association of Antimachia and the Municipality of Irakleides.

The moving tribute video dedicated to Katina Pappouli was directed by Manthos Arbelias on behalf of the Provincial Cultural Committee. In the documentary, the late Katina reminisces about the years she devoted to weaving at the loom and to traditional singing.
