Η ΒΙΟΛΕΤΑ ΤΟΥ ΓΥΑΛΟΥ, Matthiola tricuspidata

Ψάχνοντας για ένα άλλο λουλούδι, την Ασπερούλα, συνάντησα στον Κάμπο της Κεφάλου, κοντά στην περιοχή Όνια (ανάμεσα στο Καμάρι και τον Άγιο Στέφανο) τη Βιολέτα του Γυαλού.

Την βρήκαμε στην παραλία, πάνω στην αμμουδιά, να μοσχοβολάει με τα μωβ ανθάκια της με θέα το νησάκι Καστρί.

Ετήσιο φυτό που ανθίζει από Μάρτιο έως Μάϊο,κυρίως σε αμμώδεις παραλίες αλλά και ανάμεσα στα βράχια των ακτών. Το όνομά της το πήρε από τον Pierandrea Mattioli (1501-1577), ιταλό φυσικό και βοτανολόγο.O ασημοπράσινος ρόδακας των φύλλων πριν βγεί το λουλούδι είναι έργο τέχνης. Το λουλούδι απαλό ροζ ή μωβ έχει το χαρακτηριστικό άρωμα της βιολέτας. 

H επιστημονική της ονομασία είναι Matthiola tricuspidata(L.) R. Br., δηλαδή Ματθιόλα η τρικέρατη, αλλά στα Κύθηρα τη λένε η βιολέτα του γυαλού.

THE SEA VIOLET, Matthiola tricuspidata

While searching for another flower, the Asperoula, I came across the Sea Violet in the Plain of Kefalos, near the area of Onia (between Kamari and Agios Stefanos).

We found it on the beach, right on the sand, perfuming the air with its purple little blossoms and overlooking the islet of Kastri.

It is an annual plant that blooms from March to May, mainly on sandy beaches but also among rocks along the coast. It was named after Pierandrea Mattioli (1501–1577), an Italian physician and botanist. The silvery rosette of leaves before the flower emerges is a true work of art. The flower, soft pink or purple, has the characteristic scent of violet.

Its scientific name is Matthiola tricuspidata (L.) R. Br., known in Greek as “Matthiola the three-horned,” but on Kythera they call it the Sea Violet.
