ΓΛΑΔΙΟΛΕΣ , gladiolus italicus

Όλον τον Απρίλη στην Κω τα χωράφια γεμίζουν από ροζ γλαδιόλες. Η επιστημονική τους ονομασία είναι gladiolus italicus και ανήκουν στην οικογένεια των ιριδων. Σε άλλες περιοχές, κυρίως στην Κρήτη, τις λένε μαχαιρίδες. Στην Κω τα λένε και κρινάκια. Η σύνδεση των λέξεων "γλαδιόλα", "gladiolus" και "μαχαιρίδες" με άφησε άφωνη.

Αυτή η πανέμορφη ίριδα είναι ένα πολυετές (μονοκοτυλήδονο) βολβώδες φυτό της νότιας Ευρώπης αρκετά διαδεδομένο σε όλη την Ελλάδα.

Ανθίζει αργά την άνοιξη και θα τη βρούμε σε ακαλλιέργητα και καλλιεργημένα χωράφια, ελαιώνες, λιβάδια κ.λ.π.

Τα άνθη τα κάνει σε ταξιανθία και βγαίνουν όλα από τη μια πλευρά.

Της αρέσει το φως και το ύψος της μπορεί να φτάσει το ένα μέτρο.

Δεν είναι απειλούμενο είδος φυτού.

Ονόματα έχει πολλά και τα περισσότερα προέρχονται από το σχήμα των φύλλων της: Σπαθόχορτο, σπαθάκι, sword-lily (το κοινό αγγλικό όνομα). Ακόμη το λένε και αγριοκόκκορο, τσαλαπετεινό, πετειναράκι επειδή το σχήμα του άνθους μοιάζει με το λοφίο από το εν λόγω πουλί.

Άλλωστε και το όνομα γλαδίολος προέρχεται από τη λατινική λέξη Gladius που σημαίνει ξίφος-σπαθί (εξ' ού και gladiator). Άρα γλαδιόλες και μαχαιρίδες σημαίνουν το ίδιο πράγμα.

GLADIOLI, Gladiolus italicus

Throughout April in Kos, the fields are filled with pink gladioli. Their scientific name is Gladiolus italicus and they belong to the iris family. In other regions, mainly in Crete, they are called machairides (little knives). In Kos, they are also called krinakia (little lilies).

This beautiful iris is a perennial (monocotyledonous) bulbous plant of southern Europe, quite widespread throughout Greece.

It blooms in late spring and can be found in uncultivated and cultivated fields, olive groves, meadows, etc.

Its flowers grow in an inflorescence and all emerge from one side.

It prefers sunlight, and its height can reach up to one meter.

It is not a threatened plant species.

It has many names, most of which derive from the shape of its leaves: spathochorto (sword-grass), spathaki (little sword), sword-lily (the common English name). It is also called agriokokkoro, tsalapetino, peteinaraki, because the shape of the flower resembles the crest of that bird.

After all, the name gladiolus comes from the Latin word gladius, which means sword (hence gladiator). Therefore, gladioli and machairides essentially mean the same thing.
