ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΣ,Η ΝΗΣΙΔΑ ΤΩΝ ΓΛΑΡΩΝ

Την αδυναμία μας στα μικρά νησάκια, νησίδες και βραχονησίδες της Δωδεκανήσου, θα την έχετε καταλάβει. Μετά την Κανδελλιούσα, τη Ρω, το Μακρονήσι, τα Ασπρονήσια, το Μαράθι, τη νησίδα Σαρρή, τα Λέβιθα και την Κίναρο, σειρά έχει ένα ακατοίκητο νησάκι, επίσης μικρό, και επίσης μοναδικό σε ομορφιά.

Ο Άγιος Αντώνιος είναι μικρή νησίδα των Δωδεκανήσων η οποία βρίσκεται βόρεια της Νισύρου, δίπλα στο Γυαλί.

Απέχει από το Μανδράκι της Νισύρου περίπου 2 ναυτικά μίλια, δηλαδή 15 με 20 λεπτά. Η έκτασή της είναι 0,080 τ.χλμ. και στο εσωτερικό της, στη χαμηλή κορφούλα που δεν ξεπερνά τα 35 μέτρα ύψος, υπάρχει εξωκλήσι του Αγίου Αντωνίου το οποίο υπάγεται στην ενορία Νισύρου. 

Το ομώνυμο κατάλευκο εκκλησάκι από το οποίο πήρε το όνομά της το νησάκι του Αγίου Αντωνίου είναι μικρό αλλά όμορφο και φέρει στην πόρτα του τη χρονολογία 1991.

Μετά από τη σύντομη ανάβαση, ανάψαμε κεράκι στο μικρό εκκλησάκι που μετά βίας χωρούσε δύο άτομα μέσα, θαυμάσαμε την υπέροχη θέα προς το σκάφος μας και το Γυαλί και μετά κατεβήκαμε για κολύμπι στην υπέροχη παραλία με τα σμαραγδένια νερά.

Η νησίδα λειτουργεί σαν κυματοθραύστης, καθώς βρίσκεται απέναντι από τον όρμο του Γυαλιού (σε απόσταση αναπνοής).

Το καλοκαίρι γίνονται ημερήσιες επισκέψεις, μαζί με το γειτονικό Γυαλί, από καΐκια που μεταφέρουν τους επισκέπτες από τη Νίσυρο στις παραλίες. Εμείς ναυλώσαμε το σκάφος Maria Magdalini από την Κω για μια εκδρομή με 60 πεζοπόρους στο Γυαλί και τον Άγιο Αντώνιο.

Όπως η Νίσυρος και οι νησίδες της, έχουν χαρακτηριστεί από το Ευρωπαϊκό Οικολογικό Δίκτυο NATURA 2000, ως Ζώνη Ειδικής Προστασίας για τα είδη: Buteo rufinus, Coracias garrulus, Emberiza caesia και Sylvia rueppelli. Εμείς συναντήσαμε εκατοντάδες γλάρους, μάλλον Larus michahellis, και μάλλον σε περίοδο ωοτοκίας, καθώς είδαμε πολλές φωλιές με αυγά, από τις οποίες όμως μείναμε μακριά.

Ως οικισμός? αναγνωρίστηκε το 2001. Σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2011 δεν υπάρχουν μόνιμοι κάτοικοι και σύμφωνα με το σχέδιο Καλλικράτης διοικητικά υπάγεται στο Δήμο Νισύρου.

Η επίσκεψή μας στο νησί έγινε στις 30 Απριλίου και ο Άγιος Αντώνιος είχε φορέσει τα κίτρινά του. Η φίλη μου Andrea Simunkova, μέσω της ομάδας NATURE & WILDLIFE OF KOS ISLAND με βοήθησε να αναγνωρίσουμε τους υπέροχους κατακίτρινους θάμνους Anthyllis hermanniae (αλογοθύμαρο) και τα χαριτωμένα μωβ λουλουδάκια legousia pentagonia (καμπανούλα). Επίσης, οι γλάροι είναι πιθανά κιτρινοπόδηδες ασημόγλαροι μεσογείου (Larus michahellis)

Saint Anthony – The Islet of the Gulls

Our fondness for the small islands, islets, and rocky islets of the Dodecanese is surely evident by now. After Kandelliousa, Ro, Makronisi, Aspronisia, Marathi, the islet of Sarri, and Levitha, it was time to visit another uninhabited, equally small and equally unique in beauty islet.

Just a breath away from Gyali

Saint Anthony is a small islet of the Dodecanese, located north of Nisyros, right next to Gyali.

It lies approximately 2 nautical miles from Mandraki, Nisyros, a journey of about 15–20 minutes. The islet covers an area of 0.080 sq. km, and at its interior, on a low hill rising no more than 35 meters, stands a small chapel of Saint Anthony, which belongs to the parish of Nisyros.

The small, dazzling white chapel from which the islet takes its name is modest yet charming, and bears the date 1991 engraved on its door.

After a short ascent, we lit a candle inside the tiny chapel—barely large enough to accommodate two people—admired the magnificent view towards our boat and Gyali, and then descended for a swim at the beautiful beach with its emerald waters.

A natural breakwater

The islet functions as a natural breakwater, as it lies directly opposite the bay of Gyali, just a stone’s throw away.

During the summer months, day trips are organized, usually combined with visits to neighboring Gyali, by boats transporting visitors from Nisyros to the beaches. We chartered the vessel “Maria Magdalini” from Kos for an excursion with 60 hikers to Gyali and Saint Anthony.

A protected natural habitat

Like Nisyros and its surrounding islets, Saint Anthony is designated by the European Ecological Network NATURA 2000 as a Special Protection Area for the species:

We encountered hundreds of gulls, most likely Mediterranean yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis), apparently during the egg-laying period, as we observed many nests with eggs—though we made sure to keep our distance.

Although it was officially recognized as a settlement in 2001, according to the 2011 census there are no permanent inhabitants, and under the Kallikratis administrative plan, the islet belongs to the Municipality of Nisyros.

Spring colors and flora

Our visit took place on April 30, and Saint Anthony was dressed in yellow. My friend Andrea Simunkova, through the group NATURE & WILDLIFE OF KOS ISLAND, helped identify the stunning yellow shrubs Anthyllis hermanniae (horseshoe vetch) and the delicate purple flowers Legousia pentagonia (Venus’ looking-glass). The gulls we observed were most likely Mediterranean yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis).
