SAINT THEOLOGOS, KEFALOS – THE LITTLE CHAPEL BY THE SEA
Having recorded almost 330 churches on the island of Kos, many people ask me which ones I find most special, either for their location or their picturesque charm. Some even ask me to recommend a church by the sea for their wedding. Among so many churches, only a few are actually located right next to the water. Of course, there is Saint Nicholas at Kastri and Saint Irene at Piso Thermes, but both are only accessible by boat (Saint Irene can be reached on foot, but it requires a three-hour difficult hike – not something I would recommend for a wedding). There is also Saint John Perigyalis in Mastichari, which “hangs” over a cliff overlooking the sea, as well as Saint John Thymianos in Kefalos.
The only chapel that is right next to the sea and accessible by car is Saint John the Theologian in Kefalos. It belongs to the Parish of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in Kefalos.
Leaving the village of Kefalos and heading toward the southernmost point of the island, after Palatia and the fountain, there is a junction. To the left, the sign points to Saint John (meaning Thymianos), Aspri Petra, Kastelli, Pyrgi, Kavo Paradiso and Saint Mamas. To the right, the road leads to Kata and Saint Theologos (about 4 km).
The chapel is very picturesque and has the essence of Greece – white and blue right by the crashing waves. A long path leads to the large courtyard with its distinctive flooring. There, from the old tree, hang two bells, which are often photographed. One of them bears the surname Karageorgiou.
Many of our hikes to Trypiti, Charakas, Chilandri, and Kavo Paradiso begin from here, and at the end, exhausted, we end up in the welcoming courtyard of the chapel to rest.

And here is a card I created with the bells of Saint Theologos, wishing Happy Resurrection and Happy Easter!
