ΠΟΛΥΧΑΙΤΟΣ, ΤΟ ΣΚΟΥΛΗΚΙ ΤΗΣ ΦΩΤΙΑΣ (Hermodice carunculata)

Ψάχνοντας για οψιδιανό στην παραλία Καμάρι της Κεφάλου πέσαμε πάνω σ' αυτό το "σκουλήκι" που μοιάζει με θαλάσσια σαρανταποδαρούσα. Έμοιαζε αφυδατωμένο, για να μην πω ψόφιο.

Μετά από σχετική έρευνα, ανάρτηση στο facebook αλλά και στην ομάδα ΑΝΑΓΝΩΡΙΣΕΙΣ, όπου συνήθως σου λύνονται όλες οι απορίες, καταλήξαμε στα εξής συμπεράσματα: Το συγκεκριμένο σκουλήκι, ονομάζεται σκουλήκι της φωτιάς (ακριβής μετάφραση από τα αγγλικά-Fireworm, για την ακρίβεια στα αγγλικά ονομάζεται bearded fireworm=μουσάτο σκουλήκι της φωτιάς).

Οι ψαράδες το λένε σκουλόπεντρα, σκολοπεντριά, σκουληκοπετρίδα (στη Σάμο), σκολοπένδρα, σκουλόπετρα και άλλα παρόμοια. Η επιστημονική του ονομασία είναι Πολύχαιτος (Hermodice carunculata), αλλά μου το ανέφεραν και ως Νηρηίδα. Το συναντάμε συχνά κάτω από πλατιές πέτρες αλλά και στα δίχτυα όπου τρέφεται με τα νεκρά ψάρια (όπου κάτσει, σε δόλωμα ή σε ψάρι το τρώει). Το σίγουρο είναι πως τα "πόδια" του είναι γεμάτα βελόνια με δηλητήριο. Είναι επώδυνο το 'τσίμπημά' του, δε χρειάζεται να το πιάνουμε.

Στη δική μας την περίπτωση, μάλλον το ξέβρασε το κύμα νεκρό, γι'αυτό ήταν και ακίνδυνο, διαφορετικά καλό είναι να μην το ακουμπήσουμε αν το συναντήσουμε.

POLYCHAETE, THE FIREWORM (Hermodice carunculata)

While searching for obsidian on the beach of Kamari in Kefalos, we came across this “worm,” which looks like a marine centipede. It appeared dehydrated—if not dead.

After some research, a post on Facebook, and a query in the group ANAGNORISEIS (Identifications), where questions like these are usually answered, we reached the following conclusions: this particular worm is called the fireworm (a direct translation from the English term fireworm; more precisely, in English it is known as the bearded fireworm).

Fishermen refer to it by various names: skoulopentra, skolopentriá, skoulikopetrída (in Samos), skolopéndra, skoulópetra, and similar terms. Its scientific name is Hermodice carunculata, and it is classified as a polychaete, though it was also mentioned to us as a Nereid. It is often found under flat stones and in fishing nets, where it feeds on dead fish (wherever it settles—on bait or on a fish—it consumes it).

What is certain is that its “legs” are covered with venomous bristles. Its sting is painful, so it should not be handled.

In our case, it was most likely washed ashore dead by the waves, which is why it was harmless. Otherwise, it is best not to touch it if encountered.
