Vasilis Kapsimalis of Zia
We often ran into him in Zia. The first time I saw him, he was sitting alone at the Watermill of Zia, enjoying a fresh lemonade, back in May 2012. We struck up a conversation, and I bombarded him with questions about the watermill and Zia. A simple, friendly, and hospitable man.

We would meet him on our hikes around Zia, with his walking stick, his thick moustache, his beret or hat, always well dressed and cheerful. He would chat with Giannis Kassiotis, and I would take the opportunity to photograph him—he looked so handsome and robust!

I didn’t know his name, though. Until today. One of his grandchildren attends my school. He saw my article about the Watermill of Zia (or perhaps someone informed him), which included a photo of his grandfather. He asked me whether I knew his grandfather, since the photo bore my signature. His name was Vasilis Kapsimalis.

That expressive face, that emblematic figure, finally had a name. I wonder how many hundreds of people I have photographed without knowing their names. Vasilis Kapsimalis passed away on 20/12/2019, at the age of 85.

He was the father of six children and the grandfather of many wonderful grandchildren. A giant with the heart of a small child. Strong, hardworking (the hoe, the shovel, and the wheelbarrow “suffered” in his hands), with a special love for his village. A sociable man, a true connoisseur of life, full of humor. During the holiday season, he used to play the carols on the tsabouna (traditional bagpipe).

I dedicate this article to Giannis, his grandson.

Farewell, Giannis Agadakis...

We first met him during one of our hikes in Asfendiou on 3 November 2019, when we walked from Agios Theologos (Pyrgi, Lagoudi) to Oreia at Palaio Pyli.

Giannis Agadakis, an iconic figure of Asfendiou, was a man deeply connected to the mountains and nature, but above all, he was a man of generosity. As his granddaughter, Maria Krampousanou, told me:

"Whatever he had, he shared with those in need—goats, cheese, anything my grandmother made."

He regularly made offerings to the Church of Agios Theologos and was remembered as a kind, generous, and warm-hearted man who loved celebrating life with others.

He passed away yesterday at the age of 90, leaving behind four children and four grandchildren.

May he rest in peace, and may his memory be eternal.
